The digestive and respiratory systems By, Jack, Cade, and Derek

The respiratory system is in charge of oxygenating blood in the cardiovascular system. The digestive system is responsible for breaking down food and drink into usable energy sources. What do they do?

The digestive system

The digestive System: organs Tongue: It’s vital for chewing and swallowing food. Teeth: Another vital component for chewing food. Esophagus: It carries food and drinks to the stomach. Stomach: It digest the food in a way that makes it useful for the body. Liver: Involved in many metabolic processes. Pancreas: Critical in food processing, especially in regulating blood sugar levels. Colon: Also known as the large intestine, it specializes in removing nutrients from food. Appendix: Unknown The digestive System: organs

The digestive system: More Organs Small Intestine: It is where the primary absorption of food occurs. Gallbladder: Bile is stored here before releasing into the intestines. Anus: The opening for expelling waste materials after digestion. The digestive system: More Organs

The digestive system: Amazing Facts 1.7 liters of saliva is produced each day on average per person. Muscles contract in the esophagus in waves to allow food to move against gravity. The muscular system can be a secondary system because it helps you to chew and swallow. The small intestine is approximately 22 feet log. The stomach has to have a special lining of mucus to protect from its hydrochloric acid. Stomach rumbling can happen at any time even when the tract is empty and gets louder as it goes. The skeletal system can be a secondary system as it provide support for the system. The nervous system can be a secondary system as it provides the signals to cause digestion. The digestive system: Amazing Facts

The respiratory system

The respiratory system: Organs Nose: Responsible for inhaling and exhaling, while keeping foreign objects out. Sinuses: Large cavities in the skull, purpose unknown. Larynx: Allows air to pass through to the lungs, while blocking food and drink. Also the voice box. Trachea: Transports air to the lungs. Diaphragm: It separates the thoracic cavity (The heart) and respiration. It also causes the lungs to contract in breathing. Lungs: Responsible for oxygenating blood. The respiratory system: Organs

The respiratory system: More Organs Bronchus: It connects the trachea to the lungs. It also provides support. Bronchioles: Allows air to reach the air sacs. The respiratory system: More Organs

Amazing Facts: Respiratory system 1. The right lung is slightly larger than the left lung to accommodate the heart. 2. We breathe 13 pints of air on average every minute. 3. You lose half a liter of water a day through breathing. 4. A person usually breathes 12-15 times per minute. 5. Breathing is faster in women and children than in men. 6. The skeletal system protects the lungs through the rib cage. 7. The nervous system controls the involuntary breathing. 8. The cardiovascular carries the newly oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. 9. The muscular system controls the diaphragm contractions. Amazing Facts: Respiratory system

The cardiovascular is secondary to the respiratory as the deoxygenated blood is carried to be oxygenated at the lungs. The nervous system is secondary to the digestive system as it controls our hunger and digestions senses. More? Secondary Systems?
