USE We use reported speech when we are telling someone what another person said or thought, but do not use their exact words. When we report a statement, we use reporting verbs such as say, tell, explain, inform, state, decide etc. often followed by that.

CHANGES IN REPORTED SPEECH Personal pronouns, possessive adjectives and adverbs of time and place change:

Examples Ann said, “you are fired!” Ann said that I was fired. Peter:”I will work in the garden.” Peter said that he would work in the garden. Tim said,”I'm having my car repaired.” Tim said that he was having his car repaired.

Exercise Tom said,”I want to visit my friends this weekend.” Susan:”I'm watching TV.” Simon:”David was ill” Tom and Mary:”We have cleaned the windows.” Jean:”The boss must sign the letter.”

Tom said that he wanted to visit his friends that weekend. Susan said to me that she was watching TV. Simon said that David had been ill. Tom and Mary told me that they had cleaned the windows. Jean said that the boss had to sign the letter.
