What is a credit? When a student successfully completes a course with a grade of 70 or higher, he receives .5 credit for each semester Many middle school students enter high school with credits from classes completed in 8th grade, including Algebra I, Geometry, Languages Other Than English (LOTE) and some elective classes (Some middle school courses may be awarded a Pass/Fail grade if they are a required course. EX: Health) Credits are recorded on their high school transcript at the end of each semester.

Athletic Tryouts All students can sign up for any athletic class* they wish, but they must make the team in order to stay in the class. Cuts are typically made during summer tryouts or the first two weeks of school. Others may be made at semester. Those not making the team will be moved to PE and an alternate course. This may affect the student’s schedule. Contact coaches for more info - list on website
Athletic Schedules Sports are double-blocked (2 periods) and only receive 1 credit This means a student will receive 7 credits instead of 8 credits per year. Students may have the option to single block sport– must talk to Coaches for approval Use 4 year plan to map out courses to ensure you can take courses that you are interested in 9th-12th grade.
Summer Tryout Sports Volleyball- Tryouts begin August 1 Tennis- Tryout meeting April 24th Boys-July 29-30th and Girls July 31-Aug.1 Golf- Tryout last week of July/first week of August Swimming- TBD Cross Country- TBD These sports require summer tryouts. Choose Sport and also enough credits to equal 8 periods. Once counselor receives approval list from coaches, requests will be updated to include 2nd period of sport or if does not make team will replace the sport with a PE class. *Students choosing a sport that does not have a summer tryout will only choose sport and courses to equal 7 credits.
PHS Sports are HIGHLY COMPETITIVE! Things to consider: Have you previously played this sport at the middle school level or current Club/Select team participation? Summer requirements(Tryouts, Camps, etc) Must have a physical prior to any participation(tryout or first day of practice. Fees and Transportation to and from practices. Pre-AP or Advanced Placement What is the Pre-AP/AP program? Allows students to participate in college preparatory courses and possibly receive college credit while still in high school Who can enroll in a Pre-AP/AP course? Any student!
Pre-AP and AP Courses More complex and faster pace Pre-AP courses prepare students for AP courses AP courses may earn college credit with a score of 3 or higher on the AP exam at the end of the year Current 8th grade teachers are a great resource to help students determine if Pre-AP courses are appropriate for 9th grade

Most Importantly…. Consider how much time each Pre-AP or AP course demands Consider extra-curricular activities your student is involved in(HS Consider your child – balance is important! Level changes are only made at the end of the first six weeks and at the end of the first semester.
