New Testament Discipleship Jesus commanded His Disciples in the Great Commission to begin a discipleship program to carry on His Work after His ascension.  And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matt. 28:18-20 ESV). Looking at New Testament discipleship, one must looked toward Jesus and His commandment in the Great Commission he gave to His disciples. He told them to create a discipleship program to carry on His Work after His ascension. This commandment was carried on directly through the teaching of the apostles in the New Testament. http://247purpose.com/digital-discipleship-training/great-commission-come-together-pray/

New Testament Discipleship What makes discipleship successful… The model of discipleship comes from the imitation of Jesus Christ: Jesus said, “A new commandment I give to you… love one another… (John 13:34). Jesus gave a call to service to Peter and Andrew to become disciples; commanding they to “follow him and become fishers of men (Matt. 4:19). “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men” (Luke 5:10). His service is shown in the washing of each others feet (John 13:14) and commanded they to do “as I have done” (vs. 15). Jesus selects His disciples; “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide (John 15:16). The model of discipleship comes directly from Jesus Christ. Jesus gave a new commandment His disciples to love one other as sacrificially as He did, as opposed to “loving your neighbor as yourself” found in the Old Testament (Lev. 19:18). In the call to service of Jesus’ apostles to become His disciples; he commands they to become fishers of men (Matt. 4:19). The metaphor has a Biblical background which provides some clue to the nature of their new calling or, since they are already fishermen, to a new type of fishing and a new catch (Luke 5:10). His model of service is illustrated in the washing of feet in sacrificial service to one another. Jesus said since He is their Lord and Teacher, having washed their feet, they needed to model themselves after His actions (John 13:14). Not only are we to serve one another, we are to have forgiveness the same way Jesus would cleanse one from their sin. In verse 15, Jesus commands His disciples to “do just as I have done to you.” “To be a disciple means to be in union with Jesus and through Jesus with God—a union that is mutual and oriented toward community . Although the disciples are friends of Jesus, they are obedient followers acting in love. Jesus chooses his disciples and taught in His Farewell discourse that as followers and disciples one is to bear fruit and then fruit should abide.

New Testament Discipleship The purpose of discipleship is to spread the gospel. Paul taught; “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ” (1 Cor. 11:1). The Apostle Paul taught that we are to imitators of Christ. In his letter to Timothy, Paul wrote:  ”Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.  By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you” (2 Tim. 1:13-14). “And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also” (2 Tim. 2:2). Paul modeled for believers how one is to multiply disciples with faithful men. In Apostle Paul’s letter to Timothy; With the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me (2 Tim.1:13), by the Holy Spirit who dwells within us (vs.14), and entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others (2:2). http://www.thebridgeonline.net/sermons/how-to-multiply-disciples/

Discipleship Modes Found Within the Church. Encountering Jesus One must encounter Jesus to be His disciple. One cannot be a disciple of the Jesus, if one does not die to himself (Matt. 16:25). Deny oneself and take up His cross and follow Jesus (vs. 24). Discipleship is the lifelong process of accepting God's invitation to mature, transform and become like Jesus. The first mode of discipleship according to the lecture is “encounter.” We need to encounter Jesus in order to become a disciple. To encounter Jesus one much first “die to oneself.” “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matt 16:25). It is a requirement to deny oneself and take up the cross of Jesus. ”Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (vs. 24). According to the mentoring program at my church, discipleship is one’s lifelong process of accepting God’s invitation to mature, transform and become like Jesus. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cb-JAk-xS3o

Discipleship Modes Found Within the Church. Imitate Being a disciple requires an open, teachable spirit, willing to spend time with someone who wants to help one follow Jesus and experience the best life possible. Model one’s transformation after Jesus’ life. His love (John 13:34). His mission (Matt. 4:19). His humility (Phil. 2:5). His service (John 13:14). His suffering (1 Pet. 2:21). His obedience to the Father (1 John 2:3- 6). Discipleship Modes Found Within the Church. His mission – “And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of me” (Matt. 4:19). His humility – “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 2:5). His service – “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet” (John 13:14). His suffering – “For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps” (1 Pet. 2:21). His obedience to the Father – “And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked” (1 John 2:3-6). http://truth459.blogspot.com/2011/04/fishers-of-men-101blog.html

Discipleship Modes Found Within the Church Replicate Replicating a relationship with Jesus for others to follow. We are called to “make disciples,” not make decisions for Jesus. Discipleship is journeying through life together in community while learning to obey the teachings of Jesus. Personal evangelism is a key component to pointing people to Jesus. Being a disciple means pointing people to Jesus. Creating a culture where disciples make disciples. Replicate Replicating a relationship with Jesus for others to follow. Discipleship Modes Found Within the Church Cultivate Cultivating discipling comes from having an open, teachable spirit, willing to spend time with someone who wants to help one follow Jesus and experience the best life possible. Pastors or leaders within the church who model discipleship within the local church are positioning the church to grow in health. If a pastor or leader does not model a discipling's relationship within the church, this will breed a high disregard for discipleship, and spiritual growth of the body will be stunted. Discipleship Modes Found Within the Church Ways to Cultivate If you are looking for a mentor, begin by observing how others live and notice the ones you admire. Choose one of these people and ask them to have coffee with you. Begin learning more about their life. Ask for their input into specifics of your life. You may gain all you need in one sitting, or you may want to continue that relationship for a season. If you want to mentor others, the process is similar. Begin by making friends outside your circle. One easy way to do this is to join a six pack. 6-packs are small groups made up of 6 individuals born in different decades.  Ways to Cultivate If one is looking for a mentor or someone to disciple them, start by observing how others live and notice the ones you respect.
