Purpose To spread American culture and Democracy. The right and duty to spread American values all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

Challenges Mexican government unwilling to sell territory to the United States government. Racism justified taking lands belonging to Indians and Mexicans.

Economic Incentive Americans wanted to expand to the rich and beautiful lands of the Southwest. American officials wanted to gain the fine ports of San Francisco and San Diego.
