JRC support to EC work on endocrine disrupters Elise Grignard 23 November 2018

throughout the whole policy cycle Joint Research Centre's Mission " As the science and knowledge service of the Commission our mission is to support EU policies with independent evidence throughout the whole policy cycle "

EURL ECVAM Established under Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes Integrating testing strategies/developing new risk assessment paradigms (avoiding use of animals) Validation of testing approaches Dissemination and application: Facilitating stakeholder dialogue International promotion and regulatory acceptance (e.g.OECD)

JRC Activities on Endocrine Disrupters Scientific criteria for the identification of endocrine disrupting substances EAG: scientific aspects, end of 2011 until the Summer of 2013 . MS representatives, NGOs, Industry. provide advice/orientation on key factors relevant to scientific criteria for the identification of endocrine disrupting substances, not specific to any regulatory framework 2) A second report related to the uncertainties in establishing thresholds of adversity for endocrine disruptors (low dose effects and NMDR) 3) collect and assess available evidence regarding endocrine disrupting effects of selected substances in a limited amount of time. The methodology was used to determine which of approximately 600 substances would be potentially categorised as ED under the following four policy options (about 10 months).

Priorities for new testing approaches Workshop on setting priorities for further development and validation of test methods and testing approaches for evaluating endocrine disruptors – May 2017 https://publications.europa.eu/en/publication-detail/-/publication/6b464845-4833-11e8-be1d-01aa75ed71a1/language-en/format-PDF/source-search Draft Detailed Review Paper on the retinoid system Workshop on thyroid disruption – March 2017 https://publications.europa.eu/en/publication-detail/-/publication/472d2c88-a8b1-11e7-837e-01aa75ed71a1/language-en/format-PDF/source-search Temporal aspects in the testing of chemicals for endocrine disrupting effects (in relation to human health and the environment) – Jan 2018 https://publications.europa.eu/en/publication-detail/-/publication/58430e34-f4ef-11e7-be11-01aa75ed71a1/language-en https://publications.europa.eu/en/publication-detail/-/publication/1c678970-3aad-11e7-a08e-01aa75ed71a1/language-en/format-PDF/source-search

Priorities for new testing approaches Development of a study protocol for thyroid disruptor testing in the mammalian system Horizon 2020 -

EU NETVAL Validation Study EURL ECVAM: validation study to assess in vitro methods for the detection of thyroid disrupters 17 methods investigated by 14 laboratories of the EU-NETVAL (European Union Network of Laboratories for the Validation of Alternative Methods) https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/science-update/vitro-methods-detection-thyroid-disruptors
