What? What is it? Bioenergy: Renewable energy produced by living organisms. Biomass: Biomass is material that makes up living organisms or comes from organisms. Biomass is often used as fuel for power station for the generation of electricity. Other examples of Biomass is wood, manure, and grain. “Bioenergy has the potential to be carbon-neutral by balancing the amount of carbon released in use of bioenergy products with an equivalent amount put into and stored in soils, plant and animal tissues, or other material such as the ocean floor.” (http://www.wgbn.wisc.edu/conservation/ecological-and- environmental-impacts-bioenergy) Slide 2

Who Slide 4 Who does it effect? It effects us. We eat biomass. Snice I mentioned that grain was an example of biomass. Grain is in a lot of foods we eat. Think of that when you’re eating your Mini Wheats and Cheerios. Biomass also effects the environment. Go figure right? Wood was mentioned as an example of Biomass. And people still burn wood for energy and heat. Biomass also effect animals. Organisms at lower trophic levels generally exist in far greater numbers, with greater Biomass than organisms at higher tropic levels. Slide 4

Who part 2 Slide 5 Who is my target audience? Everyone. We use Biomass and Bioenergy almost everyday and everywhere. More will be explained in future slides. Slide 5

Why should it be used over other sources of energy? Biomass can be used for energy. Industrialized nations are developing new ways to use biomass as a source of energy. Which is a very good thing. Because biomass energy can now power motor vehicles and generate electricity! Biomass and Bioenergy have some benefits. Why? Slide 6 Look at notes

Where Slide 7 Where is it used? As said before, We all use it and it is used everywhere. We use Biomass and Bioenergy here in Canada, down in the USA, and some other developing nations as well. Like the air we breathe, Biomass and Bioenergy is everywhere. Slide 7

Bioenergy is part of a global carbon cycle Bioenergy is part of a global carbon cycle. In some cases, the amount of CO2 emitted will be large and will require decades if not hundreds of years to be withdrawn again by bioenergy crops or native vegetation. Slide 8

Bioenergy and Biomass 101 Slide 9 To this day, there is no scientific consensus on whether bioenergy as a whole contributes to or abates global climate change. Which could be a good thing or a bad thing. Bioenergy and biomass crops are often promoted by environmentalists and government leaders as having the potential to provide tremendous amounts of wildlife habitat and to support biodiversity.  Bioenergy potentially impacts water resources through two pathways: water use in biomass production and water use during feedstock conversion. The impact of bioenergy to water is often referred to as the “water footprint”. Slide 9

How How will our future change with the use of this renewable resource? We can change the way we power our homes. We can change the way we also power our trucks and cars and vans. We also can keep not just our home warm with a fireplace, but we can also use the fire to cook. Slide 10
