Chapter 6 Steps Toward the Revolution 1827-1836

Warm-Up Thursday, October 16 What ideas about government did settlers from US bring to Texas? How did it contrast with Mexican government? Chapter 6 Partial Vocabulary List Minister - represents one country to another country Civilians - people who are not in the armed forces. Self-government - giving people an active role in making laws and decisions. Anglos - Americans who settled in Texas—lived like Americans. They spoke English. They did not worship as Catholics. They had little to do with the government of Mexico. Garrisons - military posts.

Warm-Up Friday, October 17 Describe the centers of power in the Mexican Government in the late 1820’s. What does separation of church and state mean in the U.S.? How does this affect relations between settlers in Texas and the Mexican government? What was in the Mier y Teran Report?

Chapter 6 Section 1 In the 1820s, Americans were moving west. Mexico feared that the United States would try to take Texas. Attacks by the filibusters made that fear grow. Some Americans thought that Mexico did not want Texas.

The settlers wanted self-government, giving people an active role in making laws and decisions. In Mexico, common people had little power.

Chapter 6 Section 2 In 1826, some people in Haden Edwards’s colony rebelled. They were defeated.

Chapter 6 Section 2 Still, this event worried the leaders of Mexico. They sent General Don Manuel Mier y Terán to report on what he saw in Texas.

Chapter 6 Section 2 Third, they sent more troops. They built five new garrisons, or military posts. At the same time, Mexico was having problems. Different groups were fighting to win control of the government. Army leaders then took over, hoping to make the country more stable.
