The Allies Plan for Victory

Objective: Students will evaluate the value of a two-front war and discuss the rocky relationship of the Allies and be measured through their Cornell notes, QW, discussion, and exit slip.

Setting the Stage After Pearl Harbor, Winston Churchill , Stalin, and Roosevelt meets Stalin asked the allies to relieve German pressure on his armies in the east Opening up a second front would split Germans’ strength by fighting on two fronts

The North African Campaign Churchill urged that Britain and the U.S. strike first at North Africa and southern Europe The British sent General Bernard Montgomery “Monty” 1,700 British troops forced Rommel and his German troops to fall back American General Dwight D. Eisenhower landed on the opposite side of Africa Rommel and his German troops were smashed between the two armies

JTPS (Justify Think Pair Share) Why was the North African Campaign important to the Allies? Explain.

Battle of Stalingrad Soviet Union was left to defend itself Was able to stall Germans at Leningrad and Moscow Germans launched their blitzkrieg at Stalingrad on Aug. 23, 1942 By November, Germany controlled 90 percent of the city Russian winter came again, which allowed the Russians to counter attack Feb. 2, 1943 – 90,000 frostbitten, starving German troops surrendered This defense cost the Soviets over 1 million soldiers 99% of the city was destroyed

Invasion of Italy Stalin urged the U.S. and British to invade France to relieve eastern Europe Instead, the Allies invaded Italy July 10, 1943 Italy is captured and Mussolini is taken out of power

Total War Rationing was important to the Allies From meat to laundry soap – these items were scarce Many women were put to work producing military weapons (18 million U.S. jobs were created) Propaganda was used to help promote morale at home WWII helped to bring the U.S. out of the Great Depression

JTPS #2

The D-Day Invasion End of 1942, the war had begun to turn in favor of the Allies Began secretly building a force in Great Britain Eisenhower was to command an army of 3.5 million troops, planes, ships, and tanks Germans knew that an attack on France was coming, but where? Plan was to strike on the coast of Normandy

The D-Day Invasion June 6, 1944 British, American, French, and Canadian troops fought their way onto a 60 mile stretch of beach in Normandy Germans fortified the beach with machine guns, rocket launchers, and cannons The beach was chaos, dead bodies everywhere Despite heavy casualties, the Allies were able to march triumphantly into Paris on Aug. 25 By Sept., France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands were liberated Next, the Allies had their eyes set on Germany

QW #21 – U.S./Britain/S.U. Compare the relationship between the U.S./Britain and the Soviet Union. How did the Allies treat Stalin and the Russians? Explain. Predict: What can this lead to in the future? 1 paragraph

QW #22 – D-Day Objective: Students will analyze a movie clip from Saving Private Ryan and discuss the importance of the D-Day invasion and the realities of war as measured through their video analysis, QW, and discussion.

QW #22 – D-Day How would you feel if you were one of the soldiers for the Allies during the D-Day Invasion? Would you be excited? Scared? Honored? Elaborate on your feelings. After learning about the D-Day Invasion and watching clips from Saving Private Ryan, do you think war can be justified? Why/why not? Why do you think there are still wars being fought even in today’s modern world? Explain. 1 paragraph for each bullet
