Agenda Item 7: Review of the list of priority substances (Decision 2455/2001/EC): (a) Overview of the database and the comments received Database content WG-E(4)-08-03- The central database and associated data treatment B.FRIBOURG-BLANC, IOW (b.fribourg-blanc@oieau.fr)

Overall situation Almost all countries provided data: Many thanks to all data providers…

Preliminary data treatment Only datasets for surface water River, Lake, Transitional, Coastal, Marine Elimination of : data measured before year 2000 non relevant parameters (e.g. P(tot), Nitrates, etc.) datasets for which neither LOD or LOQ was provided Insufficient precision of matrix or fraction (all ”other”) Correction With MS of missing LoD/LoQ, fraction, inconsistencies… Internally for missing CAS N°, wrong names, doublets Harmonisation of the measurement units Water: µg/l, Sediment: µg/kg dw, Biota: µg/kg ww

Summary situation: database content (28 Feb 08) Surface water 24 Member States + CH and NO 20 104 stations 5 water body types 385 219 sampling 5 068 940 analysis 937 substances Source : RBD GIS layer 2005 : Nilsson et al: International River Basin Districts under the EU Water Framework Directive, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), IOW treatment)

Stations 5 Water Body Types (N° of stations): River: 16 575 Lake: 1 214 Transitional: 868 Coastal: 1 383 Marine: 41 Source : RBD GIS layer 2005 : Nilsson et al: International River Basin Districts under the EU Water Framework Directive, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), IOW treatment)

Number of analysis

Apportionment of analysis LoD ….and/or LoQ are provided 26% analysis where the substance is not detected 58% analysis where the substance is detected 16% analysis where the substance is quantified

EU relevance of substances

Substances analysed in 16 countries or more

Matrices and fractions (5 068 940 analysis)

Conclusions and perspectives The central database : A centralised dataset The cornerstone for the definition of a manageable list of substances presented with the prioritisation process The first building block to apply the monitoring-based prioritisation method A living system that will be transferred to WISE and the EEA New treatments needed: by RBD, validity criteria?

Thanks for your attention…
