Macbeth Act V The Fall of Macbeth

Act 5 Scene 5 At the start of the scene why is Macbeth unafraid? He thinks his enemies are cowards He thinks his castle is strong enough to last out a siege He thinks he has more soldiers than Malcolm and Macduff He thinks the messenger is lying

Act 5 Scene 5 What noise disturbs Macbeth? a)The sound of women crying b) The sound of a storm outside c) The war cry of the enemy d) The sound of soldiers battering down the castle gate

Act 5 Scene 5 What does Macbeth say used to frighten him? a)Spiders in the bath b) Witches and ghosts c) Sad news and people shouting d) Lady Macbeth nagging him

Act 5 Scene 5 How does Macbeth react to the news his wife has died? He laughs hysterically and cries He says she was beautiful and that he will never love again He wishes he could have saved her He says she would have died some time and the news could have come at a better time.

Act 5 Scene 5 What does Macbeth say he feels about life now? Life is pointless and everyone is on earth for a short, unhappy time There’s a lot to live for and he will remain as king He will live happily when his enemies are dead He can’t live without Lady Macbeth

Act 5 Scene 5 How does Macbeth feel at the end of the scene. Fearful but determined to fight to the death Happy and excited that he is going to kill Duncan Depressed that he is trapped in his castle Worried that he will starve to death inside the castle

Answer 1 At the start of the scene why is Macbeth unafraid? b) He thinks his castle is strong enough to last out a siege This shows Macbeth’s false confidence. He ignores the truth of what the messenger tells him

Answer 2 What noise disturbs Macbeth? a)The sound of women crying This provides a contrast to Macbeth’s cold hearted response and highlights how he has been destroyed morally

Answer 3 What does Macbeth say used to frighten him? c) Sad news and people shouting “The time has been, my sense would have cooled/ To hear a night shriek…….I have supped full with horrors;/ Direness, familiar to my slaughter house thoughts,/ Cannot once start me.” This reminds of Act 2, Scene 2 when Macbeth jumped at the slightest noise. He has become cold and heartless.

Answer 4 How does Macbeth react to the news his wife has died? d)He says she would have died some time and the news could have come at a better time. “She would have died hereafter:/ There would have been a time for such a word”

Answer 5 What does Macbeth say he feels about life now? Life is pointless and everyone is on earth for a short, unhappy time Out, out, brief candle!/ Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player/ that struts and frets upon the stage,/ And then is heard no more: it is a tale/ Told by an idiot..”

Answer 6 How does Macbeth feel at the end of the scene. Fearful but determined to fight to the death Macbeth could have decided to stay inside and wait out the siege, it seems he may be willing to die. “I ‘gin to be aweary of the sun,/ And wish the estate o’ the world were now undone.” This means I am beginning to be tired of life and wish the ordered universe would fall apart.
