Recent studies demonstrate that the theropod lineage leading to birds exhibited both high rates of morphological evolution and a pervasive trend of decreasing body size. As one approaches the node indicating the divergence of birds from other theropods, uncertainty increases regarding the precise arrangement of feathered theropod species and early birds. Controversial taxa such as Xiaotingia, Anchiornis, Aurornis, and Epidexipteryx have recently vied for a position on the bird branch.
