Nedunchezhiyan Major Research Project funded by the UGC. well known historian A.L.Bhasham did his doctoral research on “History and Doctrines of Ajivikas – A Vanished Indian Religion” after his research not many serious studies were made on this historically important religion, which contributed so much to the world from the Thamizh society. Aaceevagam refers to the Ajivikas origin and identity, culture and communication of Thamizhs.

struggle between the matriarchal Tamil society and the Sanskritized patriarchal Brahminic community The Ayyanar image is imprinted in the very fabric of Tamil society. It celebrates Tamil heroism. six proponents of this philosophy come out with six truths. They are bliss and sorrow, birth and death, wages and losses Markalikosalar, the founder of Aaceevakam, stands as a witness to the existence of pre-Ariyan Thamizh sociey. It arose around 500 BC and lasted till 13th century.

Assevagam classified life into seven colours Assevagam classified life into seven colours. Black, Blue, Green, Red, Yellow, White and Pure white. it had several stages in the followers of this religion which marked by a colour. beginner was associated with Black and those who attained the final stage was associated with pure white or (Nal Vellai) Sage who attained this final stage called Parama Chukka in Pali language. they were called as Ayyanars. they were experts in Astrophysics and forecasters Manimegalai and Neelakasi referred this philosophy as Parapakkam deals about other religion except vaishnavism. imperial Cholas became believers and supporters of Saivism they taxed the Aaceevakars heavily in order to rout the religion even by killing the sages cruelly like impalement (Kazhuvattram) Estimate According to Ka. Neduncheliyan, Aaceevakam originated in Tamizh Nadu and spread out to other parts of India. The Ayyanar worship is the remnant of Aaceevakam. We need to interpret Ayyanar within the historically specific contexts. As he suggests, Ayyanar worship needs further exploration.

According to A.L.Basham's work on Ajivika (Follower of the Way of Life) which published in 2002. he stated about Ajivika it has been called 'a vanished Indian Religion‘. In Southern India it was termed as Ajivikism or Aseevagam which arose at the time of Jainism and Buddhism. its founder is known by the following names: Makkhali Gosala, Gosala Mankhaliputta and Maskarin Gosala Mankhal
