Action Web: Towards Viewing a Mobile World in the First Person Raghu K. Ganti, Yu-En Tsai, Jung Ahn Han, Nam Pham, Tarek Abdelzaher, and Michael Ward Illinois Center for Wireless Systems Sponsored by NSF and Microsoft Research INTRODUCTION Goal: Develop middleware tools to monitor activities in the world as experienced by their participants (a “first-person” view), as opposed to providing external accounts of the activities (a static camera or “third-person” view) Sensors emplaced on mobile entities (humans, cars, etc) User views the world as experienced by the mobile entity Middleware streams data from entity to user Integration with Microsoft sensor search portal, SensorMap Applications: Personal window (remote personal context reconstruction) Nature monitoring (a “birds-eye view” - literally) Data stream sources Data stream processors Data stream consumers Sensor Web MIDDLEWARE AND APPLICATION-INDEPENDENT TOOLSET Architectural goals are to support: - Mobility: Key issue is that the source is mobile. - Heterogeneity of sensor data: System must handle a large number of different sensor data types - Sensor evolvability: New sensors may be added into the architecture with ease - Data analysis tool evolvability: An extensible set of analysis tools may be used to interpret or view data - Off-the-shelf compatibility: Design should favor existing tools, standards, and protocols when possible - Access control: System must ensure privacy and security of data - Application evolvability: New applications should be easy to introduce PRELIMINARY IMPLEMENTATION AND DEPLOYMENT Application: Bioscope Visualization and access of avian activity data measured by attachable sensors Application: ActivView Visualization and access of human activity data measured by wearable sensors SensorMap object: Jacket instrumented with accelerometers and GPS SensorMap object: 0.1 gram streaming microphone and beaconing device on a female Cardinal Archival View Triangulated Location View Streaming Audio (bird vocalizations) GPS Location View Activity View Deployment site near UIUC campus
