Volume 58, Issue 2, Pages 873-880 (August 2000) Recombinant versus natural human 111In-β2-microglobulin for scintigraphic detection of Aβ2m amyloid in dialysis patients  Jürgen Schäffer, Wolfgang Burchert, Jürgen Floege, Peter Gielow, Christine Kionka, Reinhold P. Linke, Elisabeth H. Weiss, Stanley Shaldon, Karl M. Koch  Kidney International  Volume 58, Issue 2, Pages 873-880 (August 2000) DOI: 10.1046/j.1523-1755.2000.00237.x Copyright © 2000 International Society of Nephrology Terms and Conditions

Figure 1 131Iodine-β2-microglobulin (β2m) scan (performed in 1988, imaging at 72 hours post-tracer injection; A and C) and 111Indium-β2m scintigraphy (performed in 1993, imaging at 48 hours post-tracer injection; B and D) of the pelvis (anterior image; A and B) and the hand/wrist region (palmar image; C and D; panel D includes forearm/elbow region) in a 58-year-old patient (H.D.) with severe Aβ2m after 16 years of HD (arthralgias, juxta-articular cystic bone lesions in shoulders, wrists, hips, knees; carpal tunnel surgery; histology obtained at surgery for Baker cyst right knee positive for Aβ2m amyloid). While the 131I-β2m scan allowed the detection of amyloid deposits in the hip region (A), its resolution in the wrist region (C) was limited [some tracer accumulation can be noted in the region of the right wrist (arrow) but no accumulation is detectable in the hands facing upward]. In both regions, resolution is markedly improved with the 111In-β2m scan (B and D). Figure 2 111In-labeled recombinant human β2m whole-body scintigraphy (left, anterior whole-body image; right, posterior whole-body image; imaging performed 72 hours postinjection) in a 50-year-old patient (N.D.) with severe Aβ2m after 27 years of HD (arthralgia predominantly in the shoulders; bilateral carpal tunnel surgery; wrist cystic bone lesions with histologically proven Aβ2m). Figure 3 Negative 111In-labeled recombinant β2m scan (left, anterior whole-body image; right, posterior whole-body image; imaging performed 72 hours postinjection) in a 77-year-old patient (F.Sp.) one month after tumor nephrectomy of the second kidney. The first kidney had been lost several years earlier. Weak tracer accumulation is present in both knee and ankle regions.
