Review Packet Answer Key A focuses on elephants in general rather than the elephant’s trunk. 2.H The author wants the readers to understand how large elephant’s legs are. 3.D The author describes how hunters would kill the biggest elephants to obtain the largest tusks and how killing the largest elephants has affected the entire elephant population.

Answer Key Continued… 4.H The paragraph describes several different efforts to protect elephants. 5. C The prefix super- in supernatural means “above and beyond”. The definition of supernatural is “something that goes outside or beyond the natural world”. 6. G The sentence provides background information about African elephants. The reader may not have known this fact, and the fact itself helps explain why Adams is so amazed at the size of the elephant before him.

Answer Key Continued… 7. C The passage indicates that the natives are superstitious about coming across the body of a dead elephant, so the Zappo Zap is probably trying to reach the elephant before it dies. 8. H Vultures only prey on dead meat. The description of vultures coming down fro the sky to feast on this once magnificent animal is sorrowful. 9. B Both selections discuss the size of the elephant, and both authors use language that reveals admiration and respect for the elephants.

Answer Key Continued… 10. F “African Elephants” explains that elephants wander in order to find enough food. 11. D Both selections state that elephants are the largest animals on land. 12. H Stacpoole’s story was written decades before elephants were protected in any way. His point of view was affected by the time period in which he lived- hunting elephants and other big game was quite acceptable at that time.
