Ancient Egypt Vocabulary

Nile River is the longest river in the world. It is found in Africa, and it runs through Egypt.

Egypt is a country in northern Africa. Ancient Egyptian civilization began around 3,100 BCE.

Silt is thick black mud that is good for farming. It has lots of nutrients.

Papyrus (1) is a plant that grows near the Nile River. (2) is a type of paper made from dried reeds.

Hieroglyphics are the hundreds of symbols that make up the ancient Egyptian alphabet.

Rosetta Stone a large rock found in Egypt that had three different types of writing on it, one was hieroglyphics.

Afterlife is an eternal life after someone dies on Earth. Heaven is a type of afterlife.

Pharaohs were the rulers of Egypt, similar to kings. The people thought that they were gods on Earth.

Mummified meant to dry and wrap the dead body of a person to preserve it from rotting.

Sphinx is a large statue with the head of a person and the body of a lion. It was built over 4,500 years ago!

Osiris was the ancient Egyptian god of the dead. He decided if people could go to the afterlife.

Upper and Lower Egypt were once two separate kingdoms. Upper Egypt was in the south and Lower Egypt was in the north.

Pharaoh Menes united Upper and Lower Egypt and became the first pharaoh 5,000 years ago.

3,100 BCE is the year that Pharaoh Menes united Upper and Lower Egypt.

Dynasty is a family that rules a country for many generations. Grandfather Father Son

King Tut (Tutankhamen) was the boy king of Egypt. His tomb was found untouched in the 1900s.

Pyramids are huge structures that were used as tombs for Egypt’s pharaohs.
