News from Mrs. Clouse’s Room 4th Grade English Language Arts 5th Grade English Language Arts Weekly Concept: Into the Past Essential Question: How do we explain what happened in the past? This week our class will be focusing on events from the past. We will explore how historians and archeologists work to figure out how people lived hundreds of years ago. We will also be doing a reader’s theater play titled “A Thousand Miles to Freedom” set in the year 1848. Remember to turn in reading bookmarks on Fridays! Students need to read 20 minutes a night and get a parent signature.  Weekly Concept: Natural Connections Essential Question: How are all living things connected? This week our class will be talking about how all living things are connected. We will also learn about the balance of nature in both animals and plants. Remember to turn in reading bookmarks on Fridays! Students need to read 20 minutes a night and get a parent signature.  4th Grade Math 5th Grade Math We are just getting started on our fractions chapter. Fourth graders will be exploring how to model fractions. They will also be learning to use benchmark fractions to compare and order mixed numbers and improper fraction on a number line. They will be learning to find equivalent fractions in their simplest form as well. Words to know: Equivalent fractions: Fractions that represent the same number. Example: 1/2 and 2/4 Yesterday we started the Expressions and Patterns chapter. We will be learning how to write and interpret numerical expressions and plot ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. We will also learn how to work backward to solve problems. Words to know: Order of Operations: Rules that tell what order to follow when evaluating expressions. Equation: A number sentence that contains an equals sign (=). Important Dates January 27th- Late Start: School starts at 9:30am January 27th-School Board Meeting 7:00pm January 29th-Early Release 12:30pm February 3rd- Late Start: School starts at 9:30am February 5th- Report cards mailed home
