Chemistry

What is chemistry? (1) Chemistry is the study of matter. (2) A chemical formula is a set of chemical symbols showing the elements in a molecule, ex – H2O, or O2

What is matter? (3) Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space and is made up of molecules and atoms. Matter has three states: solids, liquids, & gases.

What are molecules and compounds? (4) Molecules are atoms that are bonded together – ex:O2, H20 (5) Compounds are a type of molecule when it has two or more different elements bonded together – ex: H20 All compounds are molecules, but not all molecules are compounds.

What are atoms? What is an element? (6) A substance made out of only one kind of atom – cannot be broken down into simpler substances What are atoms? (7) Atoms are the most basic elements of the universe. Atoms consist of a nucleus, protons, neutrons, and electrons.

What are the parts of an atom? (8) Nucleus – the central core of the atom made up of protons and neutrons (9) Protons* – located in the nucleus and are positively charged, an atom can have 1 or more protons (10) Neutrons – located in the nucleus and are neutral – neither positively nor negatively charged, an atom can have 0 or more neutrons (11)Electrons* – these particles move around the nucleus and have a negative charge, an atom may have one or more electrons *Every atom has an equal number of electrons and protons.

Atom

(12) Periodic Table of Elements Created by Dmitri Mendeleev Categorized the known elements by weights and properties (13) atomic number - the total number of protons in the atom’s nucleus (14) atomic mass unit (amu) - tells how heavy the element is - it is the number of protons and neutrons in the element (15) atomic symbol - one or two letter abbreviation used to indicate a symbol

Metals vs Non-Metals (16) metal - a type of element that is a good conductor of heat and electricity (17) non-metals - an element that is a poor conductor of heat and electricity (18) conductive - having the ability to transmit - like electricity
