Outdoor Education Residential Insert School Name About Bowles Bowles has been running for over 50 years. Bowles gained its name from the rocks ‘Bowles Rocks’ which it turn gained their name from the very original Dutch owner whose second name was Bowles. Outdoor Education Residential

Activities at Bowles Offsite local activities

Extremely experienced, motivated and well qualified staff Bowles Quality Extremely experienced, motivated and well qualified staff Home from home 8 hours of adventurous activities each Amazing activities and equipment Every industry accreditation for safety held Peace of mind for parents  Benefits of Bowles Extremely experienced, motivated and well qualified staff – The role that your instructors play in the quality of your visit is crucial. This is why the Bowles instructional team are some of the best you will come across. All our staff are passionate about the outdoors, highly qualified, and are not only experienced in teaching sports but also are very personally active within the sports . Many of our staff hold high level qualifications that are above and beyond the minimum requirements that other centres offer. We also employ a number of qualified teachers within our staff team and all staff take part in regular staff training and CPD events. Home from home – At Bowles we understand it’s not just the activities that make up your residential experience. Bowles provides three home cooked meals a day, free fruit every day and hot chocolate in the evenings. We have a modern dormitory block that can hold up to 104 people and a separate building that can hold up the 38 people in rooms of twos and three, each room with its own on suite shower and toilet. We have own woodlands which the residents can use plus various indoor games rooms and an all-weather AstroTurf. 8 hours of adventurous activities each day – A normal Bowles day starts at 9.15 and runs to 9.15 each evening. There is an hour lunch break and a 2 hour dinner break (which includes some free time and an option for a free swim in our indoor pool). The rest of the time the young people will be taking part in activities such as skiing, kayaking, climbing, zipwire, ropes courses and teambuilding. Most of our activities are floodlight and can still be done in the evenings when the days are shorter. Amazing activities and equipment – Bowles is extremely luck to own its own sandstone outcrop with over 300 routes, two dry ski slopes, indoor heated swimming pool plus various ropes courses, team building activities, archery, and orienteering. We also have use of our own private lake and access to local rivers. Our equipment is some of the best around and well maintained to the highest standards. We are proud to have a fleet of Jackson Kayaks designs specifically for children (regarded as some of the best boats money can buy). Our team building equipment is more than just a rope and a plank of wood, we have real swamps to cross and our own forest with numerous team building challenges and tasks Every industry accreditation for safety held - Bowles is fully licenced by the AALA, we hold the Gold standard from AHOEC, gained the Adventure Mark Ceticacate and the Learning outside the Classroom quality badge. Bowles has an excellent safety record and rest assured that safety is our number one priority. Peace of mind for parents - Be reassured by our highly qualified, experienced and mature instructors and our comprehensive safety management system. WARNING - you may experience real changes in your children. Don't tell them, but we make them clean up after themselves - children have even been known to come home and clear the table!

The Bowles Team Bowles instructors are professionals in their field Each has progressed through National Governing Body Awards, coaching courses and in-house training Many have a teaching or educational background We share the belief that the outdoors provides a healthy and enriching environment for children to develop. The Bowles staff team are extremely experienced not only in teaching the activities but we also have many that have achieved extremely high standards within the sports they teach. The Bowles team host some of the most highly qualified instructors all trained in safety and outdoor education. Everyone at Bowles has chosen to make outdoor education their career and are therefore high motivated and experienced. The photos above show the staff team on a staff training trip in Wales (top), a staff member running a grade 5 waterfall in Yorkshire (left), another staff member mountaineering in the Alps (middle) and off-piste skiing (right)

Importance of outdoor education Make new friends Empathy and social skills Different opportunities for success Overcome fears and challenges Responsibility and a sense of belonging Trust between students and students/staff Increased motivation and attainment back at school Increased confidence, resilience Communication and team working Visiting-staff and parents are regularly amazed by how much their children develop, change and grow in such a short time at Bowles. Learning to enjoy learning, to think creatively, to work with others and to believe in themselves are among the core curriculum themes at Bowles. As one child recently asked us, "Why can't school be like this all the time? We're learning and we're also enjoying ourselves."   There has been an extensive amount of research into teaching practices with the last 20 years and outdoor education has also been scrutinised during this process. There is now hard evidence backing up what we already knew: that outdoor education can have a massive impact not only on personal and physical development (Openspace research centre 2003) but also on students’ academic achievement (Offsted 2008). A review in 2015 by the Paul Hamilton Foundation found there to be 42 measureable benefits of outdoor education. Some of these are listed below and summerised on the slide; Opportunities to make new friends Opportunities to develop and practise key social skills and more able to empathise with each other Different and varied opportunities to experience success Opportunities to overcome fears, overcome challenges and try new activities Increased levels of student responsibility, cohesion and a sense of belonging. Students and staff trust each other and students feel more able to ask staff for help Increased motivation, engagement and raised aspirations back at school Enhanced confidence, resilience and wellbeing New learning continues to develop, including skills in: independent learning; study and research; self management; communication; team working  At Meta Analysis of over 600 studies has shown that a program of outdoor education can improve GCSE scores by at least one grade! (Hattie et al 2007) This is believed to be due to a number of factors but the development of a Growth Mindset is fundamental to this. This is why all our staff have been trained in Student Centred Teaching practices that directly draw out the importance of a correct Mindset.
