Ender’s Game - Motifs A motif is a recurring subject or idea based on the author’s ideas about the human condition. In this group activity, you will focus on the motifs Orson Scott Card uses throughout Ender’s Game. This activity will help guide your thinking as your prepare to create your final product, so please be sure to answer all questions and write as much information as possible. This will be very beneficial for you!

In your home team, decide which member will be responsible for each number and motif below. 1. games 2. compassion 3. manipulation 4. humanity

Graphic Organizer - 3 Levels of Reading You will use this the 3 Levels of Reading for your answers to your discussion. You will be responsible to report this information back to your home team. Inner Circle Middle Circle Outer Circle

Questions for the 3 Levels of Reading Inner Circle What does your motif mean? Define it. Explain it in your own words. Give a world example. Middle Circle Where do you see this idea in the book? Just discuss. What are the best quotes that support this motif? Write in the circle. Cite your text in parenthesis using the page number. How do these quotes express the idea? After discussing, write your own explaination next to the quote. What symbol best represents the quotes given? Draw the symbol next to each quote. Outer Circle What do you as a reader learn from this motif? After discussing, write the things you learned. How does this idea move the characters and/or the plot? After discussing, write what you think.

Round Robin Share Back in your home team you will use Round Robin to share your findings. Keep your 3 Levels of Reading visual during your presentation for your team. Pay attention to time.

Team Poster You will work as a team to create a poster. The poster must have the following information on the front of it. the most important theme of the book 3 pieces of text support that it cited each text support given must be explained how it supports the theme a symbol that represent the theme and an explanation of why that symbol was chosen each members name It is up to your team how you want this information presented on the poster. But it must be legible for other teams will be viewing your poster. Once again, pay attention to time. Once time is up, we are done.

Feedback Sheet One person in the team needs to create a Feedback Sheet that will stay with your team poster. Team Name What is done well What needs improvement

Gallery Walk You will rotate with your team to another team’s poster. You will discuss what is done well and what needs improvements with the new poster. Leave your team name and comments on the Feedback Sheet. Once time is up, rotate to the next team’s poster. Continue.

Reflection Back at your home team’s poster, read the comments left by the other teams on your Feedback Sheet. Discuss the comments as a team. On the back of your poster, write one team grade you think you earned based on your team discussion and feedback from others. After the grade, write a rationale. Pay attention to your time.

Independent Work Select one of the following questions to answer in an essay format. Be sure to answer the entire questions, provide textual evidence for support, and cite your sources. Compare the way that Ender treats Bean to the way Graff treats Ender. What does this say about the role of leadership or authority? Ender kills two children while only trying to defend himself. What is Card saying about violence? Does anyone represent “good” or “evil” unambiguously in the novel? Are there any values that the novel suggests are universal? What do you think of Ender’s observation that “sometimes lies were more dependable than the truth”?
