6.01 Vocabulary

Accounting equation: The foundation for accounting; represents the relationship between assets, liabilities, and owners’ equity (Assets = Liabilities + Owners’ Equity) Asset(s): Anything of value that a business or individual owns. Liabilities: Debts, usually money, that the business owes Equity: Assets minus liabilities; also known as stockholders’ (or shareholders’) equity, book value, and net worth. 5. Income: The money received by resource owners and by producers for supplying goods and services to customers 6. Net income/Profit/Earnings: Money remaining after operating expenses are subtracted from gross profit 7. Net worth: A company’s worth according to the balance sheet; also called book value 8. Accounts receivable: All monies owed to a firm by its customers 9. Accounts payable: All monies owed by the business to others

10. Accounting - The process of keeping and interpreting financial records. 11. Internal users- Are usually managers that use managerial accounting information 12. Managerial accounting - A type of accounting that involves preparing and reporting financial data to internal users, usually managers, who need financial information to control day-to-day operations and to make financial decisions and plans affecting the business 13. External users- Consist of Investors, Creditors, & Government who use financial accounting information. Accounting system - The methods and procedures used in consistently handling the business's financial information. 15. Cost accounting - Used to reduce and eliminate costs in a business. Cost accounting is used to determine a price for a product or service that will allow earnings of a reasonable profit. 16. Accountant: An individual who has had specialized training in accounting procedures

17. Accounting cycle: A process or series of steps that businesses complete to maintain their financial records effectively 18. Bookkeeping: The steps of the accounting cycle that involve recording each business transaction; the process of analyzing financial transactions, journalizing transactions, posting to ledgers, and balancing the books 19. Cash: Currency and coins 20. Credit: The arrangement by which businesses or individuals can purchase now and pay later 21. Expenditures: The monies that a business spends; also called expenses

Financial accounting: A type of accounting that involves preparing and reporting financial data to external users who are not directly involved in business operations 24. Investors: Those who invest their funds in a business; may be owners or stockholders 25. Journal: A special book or computer program in which a business’s transactions are recorded in the order in which they occur 26. Transaction: A business activity such as a sale, a purchase, or a return 27. Trial balance: The listing of a business’s different accounts and their current balances; used to check the accuracy of journal and ledger entries
