The Role of the President Social Studies Vishnu Boys’ Hindu College

Qualifications needed to be President: To be President, one must be: 1. A citizen of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. 2. At least thirty five years old. 3. A resident of Trinidad and Tobago for ten years before his nomination.

Discussion: Students and teacher will discuss the role of the Electoral College.

Responsibilities of the President: 1. The Head of State. 2. Commander-in- Chief of the Armed Forces. 3. Appoints the Prime Minister and Members of the Cabinet. 4. Appoints the Leader of Opposition. 5. Appoints all Senators. 6.Signs a Bill into a Law. The President can also veto the Bill.

Responsibilities of the President: 7. Proclaims a State of Emergency. 8. Issues pardons. 9.Issues proclamation on the commencement of Parliament. 10. Hosts National Awards Function.

Activity: Students are to identify five differences between the President and the Prime Minister.

Activity: Role playing: The class will portray the role of Parliamentarians and one student will act as the President. The President will deliver a speech for about five minutes on, “Why is there the need for a healthy family life in today’s society ?” at the opening of the new Parliamentary term. Two other students as the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition will deliver brief remarks in relation to what was said by the President for no longer than two minutes.

Students will recap the main aspects of the lesson. Closure: Students will recap the main aspects of the lesson.
