Protection and Child Protection Leaving No One Behind Niall Roche Global Health Exchange, 6th November 2018

The following is based upon My experience and perception It is not scientific BUT I have been working in Global Health for 27 years now I am not a Protection Specialist but am obligated to mainstream protection and child protection into my work.

My Hypothesis Protection has a somewhat limited interpretation Development and Humanitarian actors are focused on issues such as the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse. Physical risks don’t receive nearly enough attention thereby leaving many behind.

Definitions “Protection is concerned with the safety, dignity and rights of people affected by disaster or armed conflict” (Sphere 2011). Child Protection is the prevention of and response to abuse, neglect, exploitation and violence against children” (Minimum Standards for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action)

Standard 7: Girl and boys are protected against harm, injury, disability caused by physical dangers in their environment, and physical and psychosocial needs of injured children are responded to in a timely and efficient way Physical dangers and risks include drowning, falls, burns, road traffic accidents, wild animals (snake bites), exposure to infectious waste etc.
