Introduction Laws Help from the University Help from outside the University Some suggestions

ISWG - Legislative Compliance in Information Exchange Data Protection Act 1998 Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 Human Rights Act 1998 Disability Discrimination Act 2005 Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 Copyright Design and Patents Act 1988

Impact of Legislation for Providers of IT Services Computer Misuse Act 1990 Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 Telecommunications (Lawful Business Practice) (Interception of Communications) Regulations 2000

Yet More Legislation Procurement Regulations Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 The Health & Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 EC Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) EC Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) And lots more besides

Help from the University University Policies Some are very general and don’t say what you should do Not all areas have policies Multiple policies in conflict Information Pages From the perspective of the law rather than the individual Often not clear as to the status of a document Heavily compartmentalised Laws are updated but are the pages?

External Guidance Guidance notes to Legislation Guidance from other parties General guidance for managing IT Services eg IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL)

Suggestions Improve co-ordination of those developing policies and providing information Policies should be regularly reviewed Status of information should be made more clear Move to providing information related to a task rather than to a law Consider a more robust system for the management of IT Services such as IT-IL
