Machiavelli: Objective: to identify why Machiavelli is considered the “Father of political Science”. Read pages 352-353 in Perspectives in the Past-voices from the past ‘the Dangers of Flattery’-answer questions to be able to discuss Machiavelli’s ideas. The Prince

prelude King Ferdinand (Spain) was excommunicated by Pope (Innocent VIII) because he refused to pay “feudal dues” to the papacy. So Innocent VIII excommunicates him and offers the Kingdom of Naples to France as Charles the VIII has a “loose” claim to the throne because Charles VII-his grandfather married into a prominent Sicilian family ( Marie Anjou-thus begins the Italian wars and the beginning of the end of the Italian Renaissance.

Important to note The French invasion of Italy in 1494 is widely seen as the beginning of the end of the Italian Renaissance. Charles VIII invaded Italy to lay claim to the Kingdom of Naples, which composed most of southern Italy. The French army marched through Italy with only minimal resistance. The invasion had a profound impact on Italian society and politics. The invasion of Charles VII changed the development of Italy and can be considered one of the primary reasons the Renaissance ended. The French Invasion was to lead to a series of wars that greatly weakened the Italian City-States, prompted a greater role for Spain in the peninsula and eventually led to the domination of Italy by the Spanish Monarchy.

League of Venice 1495 Sforza (Duchy of Milan) approaches Pope Alexander VI ( pope after Innocent dies) to stop the French invasion! League = Papacy, Milan, Spain, Sicily, Venice-who were looking to get away from Ottomans) Pretty much ends the Italian Renaissance as wealthy families are spending florins on war efforts and not art-in fact so is the Pope! Many Renaissance artist go North! Ex-Leonardo to Francis I court in France

Machiavelli sees an opportunity The First Italian War, sometimes referred to as the Italian War of 1494or Charles VIII's Italian War, was the opening phase of the Italian Wars. The war pitted Charles VIII of France, who had initial Milanese aid, against the Holy Roman Empire, Spain, and an alliance of Italian powers led by Pope Alexander VI. Diplomat between city-states and Kingdoms
