“Common Sense” Closed Reading Each group will get a section of “Common Sense” to interpret for the class Note any important points that Paine makes Note any rhetorical strategies you may see

“Common Sense” Discussion Qs Why does Paine think it is in America's best interest to be free from Britain? Why does Paine think reconciliation is impossible? Who, in the last paragraph is the "fugitive," who must receive or take in that "fugitive," and why must that fugitive be received? How does Paine explain the role of kings and laws in Britain? What does he want the role to be in America? What are Paine’s best rhetorical strategies?

“Common Sense” Rhetorical Analysis In an essay, analyze how Paine uses rhetorical strategies to convince his readers of his argument. How does Paine successfully argue his point through the use of rhetorical devices?
