Presentation transcript:

Well, you’ve had time to think it over, what do you think? FIRST, IS IT NATURE OR NURTURE WHO MAKES US WHO WE ARE? SECOND, WHAT MAKES US HUMAN?

DO YOU AGREE WITH: NATURE IS OUR NURTURE – WHY OR WHY NOT? Unless children use their brains early in life, the brain will NOT fully develop. At the same time, whether a person realizes any inherited potential depends on environmental factors, which create opportunities to develop it. The sociological consensus: NATURE IN IMPORTANT BUT NURTURE MATTERS MORE!

REGARDING SOCIAL ISOLATION, WHAT WERE THE FINDINGS REGARDING NONHUMAN PRIMATES AND THIS CONDITION? INFANT MONKEYS COULD RECOVER BY ABOUT THREE MONTHS OF ISOLATION. BUT BY SIX MONTHS, ISOLATION CAUSED IRREVERSIBLE EMOTIONAL AND BEHAVORIAL DAMAGE.

ANNA Her five years of social isolation had caused permanent damage… At age eight, her mental development was less than a two-year olds. Not until she was almost 10, did she begin to use words. Died at age 10 from a blood disorder…

ISABELLE Suffered from more than 6 years of isolation Unlike Anna, she benefited from a special learning program designed by psychologists. Psychologists concluded that intensive efforts had propelled Isabelle through six years of normal development in only two. By age 14, she was attending sixth grade classes. *Was on her way to a “somewhat normal life”

GENIE Discovered at the age of 13 at home in California in 1970 Since the age of 2, she had been tied to a potty chair in a dark area/ isolated until her discovery ( 11 years) At 13, weighed only 59 pounds & had the mental development of a one-year old. Became physically healthy with intensive treatment but her language remained limited – that of a young child Eventually moved to a home for developmentally disabled adults….

What conclusion was made regarding children and social isolation? ALL evidence points to the crucial role of social experience in forming personality. Humans can sometimes recover from abuse and isolation; however, there is a point – though unclear – at which isolation in infancy causes permanent developmental damage.
