Revision 1MODIS FM1 (Aqua) SRCA Anomaly, MODIS IOT: Bryan Breen & Tony Salerno

Revision 1MODIS FM1 (Aqua) SRCA Anomaly, Description of Event On DOY 2005/137 at 01:07:30, during the 20W portion of the SRCA Full Spatial calibration, there was an abnormal output from the lamps. –Initial SRCA Setup commands executed as expected –Calibrations 16 minute warm up executed as expected –30W calibration (10 minutes) executed as expected –With 2 minutes remaining in the 20W calibration (10 minutes), lamp currents and voltages went to zero –10W calibration (10 minutes) did not execute as expected, lamp currents and voltages did not rise above zero –1W calibration (10 minutes) did not execute as expected, lamp currents and voltages did not rise above zero –SRCA Slit and Filter movements did execute as expected through entire calibration

Revision 1MODIS FM1 (Aqua) SRCA Anomaly, Elaboration of Planned Event SRCA Full Spatial calibrations normally consist of the following: –MODIS MCL SRCA Setup Commands: Turn on SRCA B –2005/137 00:20:00 MOD_TURN_ON_SRB Set SRCA Lamp Over Voltage Shutdown to Enable –2005/137 00:20:03 MOD_SET_SR_LOV_SHDN TO=ENABLE Set SRCA SIS Feedback Control to Radiance –2005/137 00:20:06 MOD_SET_SR_SIS_FB TO=RADIANCE Set SRCA 30W Lamp Configuration –2005/137 00:20:09 MOD_SET_SR_L10WX3 TO=L_1_3_4 Set SRCA 20W Lamp Configuration –2005/137 00:20:11 MOD_SET_SR_L10WX2 TO=L_3_4 Set SRCA 10W Lamp Configuration –2005/137 00:20:13 MOD_SET_SR_L10WX1 TO=L_1 Set SRCA 1W Lamp Configuration –2005/137 00:20:15 MOD_SET_SR_L1WX1 TO=L_5 –MODIS MCL Activate ISC SCS 60 – SRCA Full Spatial: Run MODIS CP Macro 23 (the only command in ISC SCS 60) –2005/137 00:33:08 ISC_ACTIVATE_GENSCS SCSID=60 »PM1_SCS_ISC_60_MOD_OA23_SRCA_FULL_SPAT

Revision 1MODIS FM1 (Aqua) SRCA Anomaly, Actions Taken Telemetry Analysis: – anomalous SRCA Full Spatial – previous (successful) SRCA Full Spatial Contacted: –Aqua FOT Bill Guit, Joe Purcell, John Nidhiry –MCST Jack Xiong, Nianzeng Che, David Moyer –Instrument Provider (SBRS) Roger Drake and Joe Auchter –MODIS Science Team Vincent Salomonson

Revision 1MODIS FM1 (Aqua) SRCA Anomaly, Current Understanding of Possible Cause(s) Lamp Failure? –Unlikely that one or both of the 10W lamps #3 and #4 failing would effect the unpowered 10W lamp #1 and 1W lamp #5 (primary 1W). Total SRCA Failure? –No. Continued functioning of the SRCA motors and active thermal sensors indicate the SRCA is functioning (at some level). Lamp Over Voltage tripped protection circuitry/software? –Most likely explanation –Over Voltage protection cuts power to the lamp ring effecting all lamps, the remaining functions of the SRCA are unaffected fits observed telemetry Awaiting SBRS confirmation of Over Voltage Protection sequence –Over Voltage protection is a soft lock up, it is reset when power to the SRCA is cycled SRCA B is currently off (as per final command in the CP Macro 23)

Revision 1MODIS FM1 (Aqua) SRCA Anomaly, Immediate Plan of Action Assess state of health of the instrument Explore scenarios of SRCA lamps being disabled while remaining SRCA equipment remains functional –Inquiry requested of SBRS regarding this issue Joe Auchter is reviewing the SRCA Lamp Over Voltage Protection Software Determine impact on science data from the loss of the planned SRCA Full Spatial Calibration and any future SRCA calibrations –Inquiry requested of MCST regarding this issue Suspension of future SRCA activities until course of resolution has been determined. –The next regularly scheduled SRCA activity was to be an SRCA Full Radiometric calibration in the first week of June.

Revision 1MODIS FM1 (Aqua) SRCA Anomaly, System Experts Contacted or Needed MODIS Flight Software: Joe Auchter of SBRS MODIS Overall System Design: Roger Drake of SBRS Additional? – unknown at present

Revision 1MODIS FM1 (Aqua) SRCA Anomaly, Impact to Science Data Immediate effects are minimal Effect from loss of SRCA Full Spatial –Last successful SRCA Full Spatial (bimonthly schedule) was conducted on –? Effect of short term suspension of SRCA activities –? Effect of possible loss of all future SRCA activities –?

Revision 1MODIS FM1 (Aqua) SRCA Anomaly, Course of Action Additional telemetry analysis? –Awaiting recommendations for any additional data to analyze outside of the current set of processed data. Tests to conduct? –Power on the SRCA Power 1 or more 10W and 1W lamps? Move SRCA motors (Filter, Grating, Slit)? –Switch to backup SRCA A? Highly discouraged – requires swap to PS1 –SRCA circuitry is not fully redundant – tied to same side power supply –Pursue only after all other options have been tried/eliminated

Revision 1MODIS FM1 (Aqua) SRCA Anomaly, Available Action Options (Real-Time Commands) Real-Time Procedures –MOD_SRCA_SETUP - power on and configure the SRCA –MOD_SRCA_LAMPS - turns on and off any configuration of the lamps –MOD_SRCA_PM_OFF - power off the SRCA –MOD_SRCA_IR_SRC - turn the IR source on/off –MOD_SRCA_GRAT_BURST - moves the grating in bursts –MOD_SRCA_HOME - turns on the SRCA, moves the motors home, turns off the SRCA –MOD_SRCA_MOTOR_GROUP - moves the SRCA motors to specified positions –MOD_STEP_MOTOR - moves the SRCA motors specific step counts
