Think about your favorite place Think about your favorite place. Think about a place that is special to you. It can be a place you’ve visited once, a place from your past, or a place you spend time in each day. Think about why you love this place. Think about the memories or comforts there. What do/did you see, hear, taste, smell or feel there? Our best writing examples come from good literature. Listen and imagine each setting as I read aloud paragraphs rich in sensory language. Read p. 60 of Number the Stars for sense of sight. Read p. 3 of Owl Moon for sense of hearing. Read p. 13 of Charlotte’s Web for sense of smell. Read p. 19 of The Snowy Day for sense of touch Read p. 152 of Little House in the Big Woods for sense of taste Think about what you see, hear, smell, taste and feel at your own favorite place, and take a few minutes to describe that place. Write it in your composition book. Give the kids 5 to 7 minutes to write about that place. Then let those who wish to do so share what they have written. Talk with the kids about the fact that for the past week they have been mining their hearts and minds for stories. They have been listening to each other tell stories. Ask how many have heard a good story from one of their classmates that they would like to keep. I like to remember things I hear and ideas I come up with.

Your notebook and the writing you put into it, will help you grow into a stronger writer. Let’s read a poem about the writer’s notebook, written by a student. Show TP of “It’s a Place.” Afterwards, ask kids which line of the poem struck them the most. Share student responses. John ends his poem: “All in all it’s a place for me.” Your notebook is exactly that, a place for you. I want your writer’s notebook to feel special and personal. Many of you brought in photographs or artifacts to decorate the cover or the first page of your notebook. Now we’ll take some time to make a cover that reflects you, your life, your interests. Look at the cover of mine. Show how it reflects me and my life. Let kids decorate their notebooks for the remainder of the period.
