Drug Overdose Deaths in Organ Donation Region 8 Topic Leader: Christie Thomas Data: Marissa A. Clark, MS UNOS Research Department

OPTN Data Collection Deceased Donors Recovered in the United States during 2010-2016 (based on OPTN data as of January 20, 2017) Deceased Donor Registration (DDR) Donor mechanism of death: Drug intoxication Limitations: We do not collect the details on the type or dosage of drug DonorNet® Does the donor have a history of IV drug use? We do not collect the details on the type or dosage of drug, the duration of history, nor how recently the history of drug use occurred The OPTN collects information on drug use in donors in 2 different ways. (1) In DonorNet, we ask the question: “Does the donor have a history of IV drug use?” and (2) on the DDR, we collect donor mechanism of death which includes “drug intoxication”. There are limitations to these fields. In DonorNet, although we collect whether or not the donor had a history of IV drug use, we do not collect the duration of that history, the severity of drug use, or how recent the history is. Additionally, we do not collect specifics on the type of IV drug used in the donor’s history. On the DDR, while we collect whether or not drug intoxication was a mechanism of death, we do not collect any details on the type or dosage of drug.
