KPPC Kentuckys Resource Center for Environmental Sustainability 7-Step Energy Management Process 1.Make the Commitment 2.Assess Performance and Opportunities 3.Set Performance Goals 4.Create an Action Plan 5.Implement the Action Plan 6.Evaluate Progress 7.Recognize Achievements 3

KPPC Kentuckys Resource Center for Environmental Sustainability Lighting Assessment Overview Importance Lighting Assessment Process Resources KEEPS Lighting Tool Application to KEEPS Assessment Report 4

KPPC Kentuckys Resource Center for Environmental Sustainability 5 Why Perform a Lighting Assessment? Better understanding of lighting systems and impact on energy use Good investment with an average simple payback of 2 – 6 years Save 30 – 50% in lighting energy and improve light levels Lighting consumes an average of 14% of the energy at a K-12 facility

KPPC Kentuckys Resource Center for Environmental Sustainability 6 Recommended Tools for Performing a Lighting Assessment Light Meter – measure light levels Ballast Discriminator – determine existing lighting systems ballasts type KEEPS On-site Energy Assessment Forms – log site assessment data Lighting Fixtures Lighting Fixture Nomenclature KEEPS Lighting Tool – identify energy savings from retrofitting existing lighting systems

KPPC Kentuckys Resource Center for Environmental Sustainability 7 Lighting Assessment Process Step 1. Become familiar with light fixture nomenclature Step 2. Understand ballast discriminators and light level meters Step 3. Conduct site assessment Step 4. Enter data into the KEEPS Lighting Tool Step 5. Evaluate results

KPPC Kentuckys Resource Center for Environmental Sustainability Step 1: Light Fixture Nomenclature Read the INSTRUCTIONS tab and FIXTURE NOMENCLATURE tab in the KEEPS Lighting Tool Print the Fixture Nomenclature tables for easy reference during the lighting site assessment 8

KPPC Kentuckys Resource Center for Environmental Sustainability Step 2: Using a Ballast Discriminator 1.Hold the ballast discriminator up to the fixture 2.Press the button 3.A red light indicates the ballast is magnetic and the corresponding lamps are T12 4.A green light indicates the ballast is electronic and the corresponding lamps are T8 9

KPPC Kentuckys Resource Center for Environmental Sustainability Step 2: Using a Light Level Meter 1.Adjust the meter to display foot candles 2.Hold the meter away from the body and at waist height 10

11 KPPC Kentuckys Resource Center for Environmental Sustainability 11 Appropriate Light Levels for Schools The State of Kentucky requires the light levels found in the table below Delamping or retrofitting with more light should be considered if light levels grossly deviate from the levels listed in the table

KPPC Kentuckys Resource Center for Environmental Sustainability Facts about Light Level Readings Think of light level readings as average maintained foot candles while the students are present Light levels can vary by over 100% depending on the amount of sunlight entering the classroom The lighting system may have the capability of producing the correct light levels; however, the lamps may be old (lumen depreciation) or there could be a significant amount of dirt or yellowing of the lens 12

KPPC Kentuckys Resource Center for Environmental Sustainability Step 3: Conduct Site Assessment Walk the school and complete the KEEPS On- site Energy Assessment Form for Lighting with the following info: Location of fixture Type of existing fixture (using the code) Quantity Estimated hours the lights are on in one year Note areas that do not have appropriate light levels 13

14 KPPC Kentuckys Resource Center for Environmental Sustainability Step 4: Enter Site Assessment Data into KEEPS Lighting Tool Enter the cost/kWh and average demand (kW) cost/kW. Refer to the KEEPS Utility Bill Analysis Tool for this information. Reference the Instructions tab for step-by- step tips using the KEEPS Lighting Tool 14

KPPC Kentuckys Resource Center for Environmental Sustainability 15 Step 5: Evaluate Results The KEEPS Lighting Tool provides estimated costs and savings for retrofitting the lighting system Energy Managers can use this information to help develop an Energy Action Plan

KPPC Kentuckys Resource Center for Environmental Sustainability 16 Optional Cost Customization The default material and labor cost estimations can be changed to fit the needs of the energy manager

KPPC Kentuckys Resource Center for Environmental Sustainability 17 Resources Available for download from the KEEPS Toolkit Library
