3.0 Temperature vs. Heat
Demo: what happens when you heat a balloon over a flame?? What if we add water to the balloon? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zih8_BqolS0
Heat vs Temperature Heat and Temperature are different terms to scientists Temperature:is a measure of how hot or cold an object is Ex the inside of a room is warmer than the window in the winter Temperature depends on how fast its particles are moving (ie its kinetic energy- hotter objects have more kinetic energy) Best definition- temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles
What is Heat? Heat is a form of energy Heat affects matter by changing how fast it moves Heat is the energy that is transferred from matter at higher temperature to matter at a lower temperature HEAT ALWAYS transfers from a hotter object to a colder one, ie, when holding ice your hands transfer heat into the ice FYI- when a person dies their body gives off heat at 1oC per hour. If the normal body temperature is 37oC and the corpse has a temp. of 32oC, that means that the person died 5 hours earlier
Heat energy and mass DEMO: 100 ml of water in one beaker, 200 ml of water in another; place on a hot plate Set up thermometers so they don’t touch the beaker Read the temperature on both, see how long it takes to reach 70oC Predictions: What happened: Option 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8H06ZA2xmo
Heat Capacity Notice how sand or pavement heat up fast in the summer and are too hot to stand on in bare feet? But if the sun goes down the sand cools off faster? The heat- holding ability of a substance is called HEAT CAPACITY
Water has the second highest heat capacity of all liquids (ammonia is the highest) this means that it takes more heat to change the temperature of water What does a value less than 1.0 tell us Put the following objects in order of how quickly they will heat up: water 1.0, aluminum foil 0.2, iron pan 0.1, Olive Oil 0.5; which will heat up the fastest? Which will release heat the fastest? Would an aluminum pan at 75oC release more heat or an iron pan at 75oC? Which is the better frying pan?
