UNIT 3 AND UNIT 4 PRESENTATION JANUARY 2016

UNIT 3 BREADTH STUDY PRESENTATION JANUARY 2016

SELECTING THE BREADTH STUDY YOUR CHOICE OF PERIOD AND DEPTH STUDIES IS CRUCIAL IN WORKING OUT THE PERMITTED CHOICE OF BREADTH STUDY By choosing the correct combination of options, centres will:   guarantee the specified percentage of British history ensure coverage of topics from a chronological range of at least 200 years prevent overlap of coverage study change and development over a continuous period of time of at least 100 years. guarantee an appropriate balance of historical coverage from particular countries

THE FOCUS OF STUDY IN THIS UNIT IS ON 100 YEARS OF HISTORICAL CHANGE AND DEVELOPMENT. WJEC has to insist that there is coverage of the whole course. The content cannot be narrowed.

THE CONTENT OF THE UNIT The content of each unit is set out around CONCEPTS / PERSPECTIVES to make it manageable and to provide some structure for Centres Each has a number of content sub – sections with a clear historical focus Each covers a MAJOR HISTORICAL THEME Each theme MUST be studied – there are no alternative routes through the specification.

THE CONTENT OF THE UNIT This involves learners: Understanding the process of historical change: causes, consequences and significance both short term and long term Understanding the diverse nature of society and impact of political, social cultural and religious change as appropriate. Making links and comparisons: testing out hypotheses before making a judgement.

ASSESSMENT OF THE BREADTH STUDY A choice of ONE essay from two in Section A and a compulsory essay in Section B. Focussed on all of the criteria in the whole of Assessment Objective 1. Requires a debate and substantiated judgement – these are not YES / NO essays

ASSESSMENT OF THE BREADTH STUDY Section A will cover one of the two themes. Select ONE from the two essay questions set. Shorter period coverage - less than 50 years and usually more in the range of 20 – 40 years. A substantial topic for debate within the theme selected for the Section.

SECTION A EXAMPLES Section A Answer one question only from this section. How far do you agree that US foreign policy was mainly isolationist in the period 1919-1941? [30] To what extent was US policy towards communism in Asia in the years 1949-1975 a consistent failure? [30]

ASSESSMENT OF THE BREADTH STUDY Section B This is a compulsory essay The answer will require coverage of change and continuity over 100 years. This is a breadth study so candidates will have to analyse change and continuity showing understanding of the main developments and turning points.

SECTION B EXAMPLE Section B You must answer this question. ‘The decisions of the Supreme Court were the most important influence on the development of civil rights for African Americans in the period 1890-1990.’ Discuss. [30]
