Luis D. Valdez February 13, 2012 Midterm Presentation City of Beverly Hills: City-Owned Emergency Container Locations and Rethinking Emergency Planning for the Future Luis D. Valdez February 13, 2012 Midterm Presentation

Beverly Hills Quick Facts Total land area = 5.710 sq. miles Population = 34,109 (2010 US Census) Population Density = 5,973.6 people per sq. mile In other words, it’s a tiny city!!

Project Background The City of Beverly Hills Office of Emergency Management is tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that the City and its various Departments are ready to respond to any emergency situation Internship duties: track, order, then track some more! 8 Emergency Supply Containers located throughout the City 30% of respondents in SPA West (5), reported being unprepared for a disaster (Source: 2005 LACHS)

Purpose I want to answer one simple question: Are the City’s emergency containers situated in the right place to maximize efficiency during a disaster or emergency? Also, based on DHHS’ definition of “at-risk”, who in the City will most likely benefit from these supplies?

“At-Risk” In addition to those individuals specifically recognized as at-risk in the statute, i.e., children, senior citizens, and pregnant women, individuals who may need additional response assistance should include those who: have disabilities; live in institutionalized settings; are from diverse cultures; have limited English proficiency or are non-English speaking; are transportation disadvantaged; have chronic medical disorders; and have pharmacological dependency. US DHHS, Progress Report on the Implementation of Provisions Addressing At-Risk Individuals August 2008

Skills Utilized Inset map Graduated symbols Aggregating attribute fields Attribute sub-sets selection Buffering Geoprocessing Charts Creating own Shapefile

Future Research Where is the disabled population (“at-risk” group)? Find suitable locations for rearrangement of containers or begin planning an unequal distribution of supplies to better match possible needs
