Technology Title I Night Copyright, Fair Use, Digital Citizenship

Copyright Rights are given under the law to the creator of a work. No action needs to be taken to ensure copyright is given. The creator has exclusive rights to determine how their work may be used. Copyright lasts for the duration of the person’s life plus 70 years.

Creative Commons This allows the creator to determine which parts of their works they will allow others to use to benefit the recipients or other creators. There are many websites offering Creative Commons works.

Public Domain These works have no copyright and are available for anyone to use.

Fair Use Purposes 1. Schoolwork and education 2. News reporting 3. Criticizing or commenting 4. Comedy or parody  

Fair Use Guidelines 1. Only use a small amount of the work 2. Add new meaning to the work to make it an original 3. Rework it and use it in a totally different way 4.  Use it for nonprofit purposes  

Digital Citizenship Internet safety for students 1. Caution students about not giving out personal information such as address or school name 2. Teach your student to only get on safe websites approved by the parent or teacher 3. Help your student create strong passwords 4. Encourage students not to share their passwords with friends 5. Help your students spot and avoid online scams
