Capability, Capacity, Competences and C for... The 4 C’s… Capability, Capacity, Competences and C for... ...Sussex by the SEA! My name is Wendy Dearing and I am the Senior manager with accountability for ETD within Sussex HIS. As a organisation we are looking at the 3 C’s..capability, capacity and competences. the 4th C is “just” a play on words…when you think of susses or Brighton as the picture shows you make think of dirty weekends or Brighton Rock so on some of your tables is some rock to think of the seaside......mind the teeth though… Making IT Work for You

About Us…. Sussex HIS was established in July 2004, by all the NHS organisations across Sussex, in order to provide effective IM&T services to all these organisations and to meet the challenges of the National Programme for IT (NPfIT). We were formed in July 2004 from the 14 It department across Sussex. We have budget of over 20 million pounds and a workforce of over 400.. Covering across Sussex and to approximate 25,000 end users

Sussex HIS is a Learning Organisation… ...dedicated to the support and improvement of patient care in Sussex. We are committed to developing the abilities of all staff and consider this a vital investment toward the delivery of quality patient care and our future. Investment in staff development is seen as vital to the retention of existing employees and their skills.   As part of the NHS we are still dedicated to providing patient care so trying to aspire to be a learning organisation

Ongoing Projects The ETD Programme Microsoft Academy The HIS Academy Management and Leadership E-Learning Career Pathways (SFIA & KSF) Apprenticeship Programmes Like most organisation we provide a range of learning opportunities they include: Normal induction—common start date H/S etc We are the MA for the SHA area so offer IT training to Sussex Surrey and Kent.. As part of our

Impact on the HIS We are proud to be home growing staff! A number of ex-cadets are now working for us… One of last year’s cadets, who now works for us,was entered into a national Advanced Hardware & Software Competition where he won a gold medal. He says…

“Just thought you might be interested “Just thought you might be interested. Back in the Summer BHASVIC entered me for an ‘Advanced Hardware & Software Competition” which was a national event with competitors from all over the country. I won a Gold Medal in this competition and came first in the country and yesterday I attended a high-profile awards ceremony and took a few pictures I think it was because of my apprenticeship here with the NHS that I gained the knowledge necessary to win this” Rob Fitzgerald

Employer of choice The Sussex HIS is seen as an employer of choice and one who supports learning and development. This will also link into the new NHS careers framework for IM&T and… It ensures that the workforce are properly skilled and qualified for their roles It encourages an interest in progressive IT methods among staff The fact that the employer is investing money in the employee and the employee is investing time & effort in their profession strengthens the employer-employee bond The programme is part-funded by the government so it presents excellent value for money It gives staff an opportunity to pro-actively pursue their career goals, thus ensuring that they are fulfilled and motivated

The Ksf… The NVQ also links into the KSF (Knowledge & Skills Framework) and promotes the Sussex HIS as a Progressive Learning Organisation

What Next…? The pilot lasts 18 months… …evaluation then takes place and the course can be embedded into the mainstream

Emma Willis “The Sussex HIS has been amazingly supportive giving me time to meet with my assessor in work, facilitating and giving me every opportunity to complete each unit, and whenever I have had a question or issue there are always many people I can turn to for help and advice. I think that the training and education opportunities made available to anyone who works for the Sussex HIS, not only this NVQ but the other courses offered are a credit to the company and a big part of why I joined the team in the first place.”

Any Questions?
