College Credit Plus 2018-2019

What is College Credit Plus? College Credit Plus is a program that allows qualified students to receive college credit while still in high school. High School and College Credit (dual credit) Free of charge to participating students and families. On campus, in the high school and online.

What Costs does CC+ cover? CC+ students will have costs paid by the school district which includes: Tuition Books (these are to be returned at the end of the term) CC+ does not include: Optional fees like parking or transportation

What are the advantages of CC+? Students can earn college credits while still in high school. Accelerate Achievement of educational goals Opportunity to enroll in classes not available at high school. Eliminate duplication of high school and college content

What are the advantages of CC+? Decrease the cost of college with tuition paid for by Xenia Community Schools Can transfer college credits to most Ohio public institutions.

What are the risks of CCP? Most college coursework is more rigorous than high school Pace is much faster – students will cover the same content as a year-long AP course in a 15 week semester. College faculty expect more work to be done outside of the classroom. Students (not parents, not guidance counselor) are working directly with colleges and college faculty High school calendar and college calendar very rarely match: Colleges still in session on teacher in-service days, modified high school schedules, weather days, and Spring Breaks.

What are the risks of CCP? Financial Risk CC+ legislation states the school district requires families to repay the cost of tuition and books for students who fail or withdraw from classes past the posted deadline. If students “drop” a course they must inform the college/university as well as their guidance counselor. Future Federal Financial Aid may be impacted Federal guidelines limit the amount of courses you may attempt (even if they are taken while in high school) to 150% of the number of credit hours needed for a degree. Federal guidelines also state that you must successfully complete 67% of the courses you attempt.

What are the risks of CCP? Participation in college classes may take time away from other activities. Students may need to limit involvement in sports and other extra-curricular activities or jobs. Transportation is not provided to campuses. Course credit may not transfer to private or out-of- state institutions. Students can be charged for books not returned at the end of the semester.

Who can participate in CCP? Students must be in 7th through 12th grade. Students must file letter of intent with their high school counselor by March 23rd. (Due to Spring Break) Students must complete the application process and meet the admission criteria set by the institution.

Who should participate in CCP? Students will be required to test “college ready” as determined by the specific college or university. Students who are highly motivated, independent, and mature. Students who have career interests beyond what is available at the high school. Students who have the time to devote to college classes.

Transferring of Credits Acceptance of credits is always determined by the receiving institution! Contact the Admission Office at the receiving institution to determine if your credits will transfer. Transferology is a wonderful website to determine course equivalencies at other institutions typically within the state of Ohio: www.transferology.com.

How Do CC+ Courses Impact GPA? Per HB 487, College Credit Plus courses must receive the equivalent weight as any weighted course within a given content area. Student grades will be converted to the Xenia Community Schools approved grading scale; however the college will impose their own grading scale as approved by the university. Example, 90% on the Xenia grading scale is an “A”, while it may be an ”A-“ at the university. 3 Semester hours = 1 Carnegie High School Credit

How Does CC+ Program Impact Athletic Eligibility?? For eligibility purposes, please be sure to meet with your counselor to confirm. Students must be enrolled and passing 5 high school classes to be eligible.

How does a student get involved in the CC+ Program? Step 1: Sign and return the CC+ Intent letter to the Guidance Office by March 23rd (due to spring break) Step 2: Student will apply to the college/university he/she is interested in attending Step 3: Student must demonstrate college readiness (ACT, SAT, Compass Test, or Accuplacer) as determined by the college/university. Step 4: Student will indicate on 2018-19 registration they are planning on taking CC+ courses (either at XHS, on Campus, or online)
