Narrative Elements Setting

Think About It… If you were writing about this classroom, how would you describe the setting?

What is Setting? Setting is the time and place of a story. It also includes the general environment The setting can be specific… Sterling, Virginia; 2000 The setting can also be vague Outer space; sometime in the future

Why Does Setting Matter? Knowing when and where a story takes place will help you to understand it better It will help draw you into a story

Setting + Mood Mood is how the author makes you feel while reading a book Ex: Happy, sad, suspenseful, etc. The setting helps create the mood

Think About It… Mockingjay, by Suzanne Collins Time – Sometime in the future Place – On the land that was previously the United States Social Environment – War of rebels vs. government Would The Hunger Games be the same story if it was set anywhere but a dystopian future facing such hardships?

Think About It… Harry Potter, by J.K. Rowling Time – Sometime in the 1990s Place – England; Hogwarts and other magical locales Social Environment – Growing up; Harry vs. Voldemort Would the Harry Potter series be the same story if it was set anywhere but a magical version of Europe?
