Wednesday 04/22 A-day Thursday 04/23 B-day Students will read to determine the meanings and pronunciations of unfamiliar words and phrases. Students will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of nonfiction texts. Students will be able to understand the concept of theme and how theme works through multiple texts. Students will justify theme with evidence from the text. Vocab 6 Review Theme Supporting Theme with Evidence Short Story

Warm-Up: Vocabulary Study all of the vocabulary words! Think of any questions you may have for the test. Make sure that one person at your group has a smart- device and that device is connected to the LCPS Open Network.

Kahoot One device per group. Question will appear. You read the question. One person submits the answer. There will only be 10 questions. When we are done, devices are immediately put away and tables are cleared for the assessment.

S – Vocabulary Set 6 Clear your desks. Devices are turned off and put away. Pencil When you are done: IN BIN Silent Reading

Today we will… Identify theme in a short story. Support your theme with evidence specifically from the story.

What’s The Big Idea? (And the Main Idea? And The Theme?) Main Idea: Summary of the text. The general gist of what is going on. Big Idea: One word that explains the idea of the text. Theme: Takes the one word from big idea and explains the universal message of the story.

Supporting your theme Introduction: Include Author, Title, main idea, & theme Support with evidence: The text says, “…” I say: 3. Conclusion: Restate theme

Underline titles & capitalize! Don’t start out with… eve baintins book fly away home. The main idea is that a boy and his father living in a airport with no where to go. The theme is that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. “I save my money in my shoe.” (24) Dad goes to job as a janitor. Andrew remembers that the bird was able to leave too. Don’t forget to always have hope and you will make it in the end. Eve Bunting Support each evidence with your own words.

Eve Bunting’s Fly Away Home is about a father and son who live in an airport but are trying to save money to live in their own home. The father and son shouldn’t give up hope, because if you have determination, you can get home. The text states that the dad keeps job hunting while working at the same time. The dad is trying to save as much money as possible for a future home. The book also says, “ I save my money in my shoe” (24). Andrew is really hoping to get their own home with any help they can get. The text says that the son, Andrew, and his friend Denny help travelers with their luggage to earn just a bit of money. These kids will earn money any way they can for a better future. Eve Bunting’s picture book teaches readers that you should never give up hope because with a great amount of determination you can get home.

Intro: Theme, Main Idea, Title, Author In Eve Bunting’s Fly Away Home, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel as a father and son live in an airport with nowhere else to live.

Helpful Hints SHORT STORIES ARE TYPED OR WRITTEN WITH quotation marks! “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” Include 3 pieces of evidence (I often only saw 2 in Fly Away Home) One must be a direct quote. Cite your direct quote! Find at least 3 Big Ideas to help you brainstorm for the thesis. Essay Outline: Your Thesis Statement is your theme. Whatever you do not finish in class is considered homework. I will give 20-25 minutes at the beginning of next class to wrap up and turn in the finished product.

Complete the following: Choose a short story: Complete the following: “The Cat Who Thought She was Dog and the Dog Who Thought He Was a Cat” (5) “The Hummingbird That Lived Through Winter” (172) “Ribbons” (524) “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” (532) “Seventh Grade” (122) “All Summer in a Day” (288) “Amigo Brothers” (352) Choose a story. 1. Grab a rubric. 2. Complete the Theme Organizer worksheet. 3. Complete the Outline worksheet. Have this formatively checked by me! 4. Complete the final paragraph of your theme analysis. ^Staple all four together and turn it into the IN BIN with your name on it. BYOT Opportunity: IF you brought your device today, you may use Google Docs to type all three assignments above in one document. Title: Last Name Short Story Theme PDFs of the stories can be found on Google Classroom for at-home reference. If you did not bring your BYOT to class, then you may write by hand .
