The Holy Spirit His Role in Our Lives John Oakes

Who/What is the Holy Spirit? What is his role in our lives? Does the Spirit speak to us? If so, how? John 16:5-7 It is good that Jesus left.

A little background Alexander Campbell/Restoration Movement Rational/Empirical approach to Bible interpretation Neo Pentecostal Movement James Gitre: “Charismatic teachings have cast a long shadow on the theological landscape”

Encouragement From the Holy Spirit 1. He lives in us. 2. It is about a relationship. 3. We can be filled with the Spirit. 4. The Holy Spirit will influence us if we let him. 5. The Spirit helps us in our prayers. 6. The Holy Spirit raises us leaders and influences the church. 7. The Holy Spirit helps us to overcome sin. 8. The Holy Spirit helps us to understand the scripture. 9. The Spirit is a seal—a “guarantee” of our salvation.

Encouragement In The Spirit He lives in us Acts 5:1-4 Acts 5:29-32 It is about a relationship Phil 2:1 Fellowship in the Spirit (2 Cor 13:13) We can be filled (or not filled) with the Spirit Acts 6:2-3 Men full of the Spirit 1 Thess 5:16-19 How might we quench the Spirit? By not listening! The Holy Spirit will influence us Acts 8:29-31

Encouragement from the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit helps us in our prayers. Romans 8:13-16 The Holy Spirit will raise up leaders and influence the church. Acts 13:2-4 (Acts 20:25-29 men made overseers) The Spirit will help us to overcome sin (John 16:8-11) Romans 8:6-13 The Holy Spirit is a seal/guarantee of our salvation! Romans 8:14-16 Ephesians 1:13-14

The Goal: Joy, Confidence and Growth in God Summary The Goal: Joy, Confidence and Growth in God Let us: Be led by the Spirit (Romans 8:14) Keep in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25) Be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18) Serve God by the Spirit (Romans 7:6)

Class #2 Acts and the Holy Spirit Some have called the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the subsequent sermon by Peter the linchpin of the Bible.

II. The Holy Spirit in Acts Acts 1:2 Instructions through the Holy Spirit. 1:4-5 Wait for the Holy Spirit. 1:7 Power from the Holy Spirit. 1:16 The Holy Spirit spoke the prophecies 2:1-4 The Holy Spirit falls on the apostles. 2:17-18 Pouring of the Holy Spirit prophesied in Joel. 2:38-39 The promised Holy Spirit receives equal billing with the forgiveness of sins 4:8 Peter spoke, as he was filled by the Holy Spirit. 4:25 He spoke through David. to lead.

The Holy Spirit in Acts 4:31 Filled with the Holy Spirit, the house was shaken. 5:3,9 Ananias and Sapphira lie to the Holy Spirit. When we sin, we “test” the Holy Spirit. 5:32 The Holy Spirit witnesses to the resurrection. 6:3-6 Those known to be full of the Holy Spirit chosen 7:55 Stephen was full of the Holy Spirit. 8:15-19 Miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit given at Samaria.

Acts and the Holy Spirit 1. The miraculous outpouring , as prophesied by John (Matthew 3:11), Joel (Joel 2:28-32) and Jesus (Acts 1:8) 2. The promised indwelling gift. Eph 1:13-14, Acts 2:36-41, Acts 5:32, Acts 19:1-7 3. The miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit Acts 8:14-17, Acts 19:4-7, 2 Tim 1:6, Hebrews 2:4 We must keep these separate and unconfused.

The Holy Spirit in Acts 8:29 The Holy Spirit tells Philip to share with the Ethiopian Eunuch. 9:31 The Church strengthened and encouraged by the Holy Spirit. 10:19 The Holy Spirit tells Peter to go with the three Gentile visitors. 10:44-47 The Holy Spirit fell on Cornelius and his house. 11:28 The Holy Spirit tells Agabus about a famine. 13:2-4 The Holy Spirit set apart Barnabas and Saul for missionary work, and sends them off. 13:52 The disciples filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit In Acts 15:28 The Holy Spirit influenced the decision of the Jerusalem Council. 16:7 The Spirit of Jesus prevents going to Bithyia. 20:22 Paul compelled by the Holy Spirit to go to Jerusalem. 20:23 The Holy Spirit warns Paul of danger. 20:28 The Holy Spirit makes and chooses elders. 21:11 The Holy Spirit tells Agabus how Paul will die. The Holy Spirit mentioned 59 times in Acts Q: What does all this tell you?

Class #3 The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament What God says about the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament (not surprisingly) closely parallels what he says in the New Testament. I. He is there at the beginning (Genesis 1:2) And he is there at the end (Zechariah 4:1-11)

Zech 4:1-11 Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit II Zech 4:1-11 Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit II. He was present in the Temple

The Trinity in the Temple

The Holy Spirit is Poured Out III. He is available without limit Zechariah 14:6-9 Ezekiel 47:1-12

IV. the holy Spirit gives life Ezekiel 37 He’s Alive!

Ezek 37 The valley of dry bones Ezek 37:2 The bones are “very dry” No hope!!! God specializes in this kind of situation. Ezek 37:3 Son of man, can these bones live? Q: Can your neighbor live? Can your marriage live? Can you spiritual life be revived? 37:4 The solution to spiritual death: “Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.” Sometimes we need to preach to dry bones! 37:5 Revived by receiving the Holy Spirit. Zech 4:6 Rom 8:9-11 37:7-10 A bizarre vision! 37:11-14 Primary application is to Israel. God will bring them back to life in Canaan. (but it is a double prophecy)

The Holy Spirit in the OT He is there at the beginning and the end of the OT. He was present in the Tabernacle. He is available to us without limit. He gives life to the dead. He teaches us. He prompts us in the way to go. He is grieved when we sin. He works through us in our gifts. He raises up leaders of God’s people.

Aside: Theology of the Holy Spirit filioque? Does He proceed from the Father and the Son? Or does he proceed from the Father through the Son? John 14:26 The trinity: Matthew 28:19 The Tabernacle as support of the trinity

V. The Holy spirit teaches us Nehemiah 9:19-21 You gave your good Spirit to instruct them…. Your manna… water for thirst. Job 32:8 The Spirit in a man… the breath (note the use of breath) of the Almighty… gives him understanding.

VI. The Holy Spirit prompts us In the Way We Should Go Psalm 143:10 (from David) …may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

VII. The Holy Spirit is grieved when we sin. Isaiah 63:9-10 Psalms 51:11 David equates being “cast from your presence” with “take your Holy Spirit from me.” All these hint at the New Testament teaching that if we willfully continue in sin, the Holy Spirit will leave us and we will end up lost.

VIII. The Holy spirit works through our gifts Exodus 31:3 And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts (Exodus 31:3). Exodus 35:30-36:1 Through the Spirit of God Bezelel was given skill, ability and knowledge of all kinds of crafts—to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze. 1 Chron 28:12 He gave him the plans of all that the Spirit had put in his mind for the courts of the temple of the Lord and all the surrounding rooms, for the treasuries of the temple of God.

IX. The Holy Spirit Sets apart and raises up leaders for his people. Joseph Genesis 41:38 Moses Numbers 11:17, 25-29 Joshua Numbers 27:18 Deuteronomy 34:9 David 1 Samuel 16:13-14 2 Sam 23:2 Gideon Judges 6:34 Jephthah Judges 11:29 Elijah and Elisha 2 Kings 2:9, 13-15 Isaiah Isaiah 48:16-17 Ezekiel Ezekiel 2:1-3

Summary They will know that I am the Lord their God when I regather them to their own land after having exiled them among the nations. I will leave none of them behind. I will no longer hide My face from them, for I will pour out My Spirit on the house of Israel. This is the declaration of the Lord. Ezekiel 39:28-29 Amen!
