Prepared by J. Elkington. Edited by T. Wilson Kaputuhi Marae, Waitomo 2nd Implementation of whanau tautoko Trevor Wilson And Jacquelyn Elkington 25th – 26th Mahuru 2010 Prepared by J. Elkington. Edited by T. Wilson

Prepared by J. Elkington. Edited by T. Wilson Report includes: The invitation What we did Why we did it How we did it Participant Feedback Facilitator Learnings Acknowledgments Prepared by J. Elkington. Edited by T. Wilson

The Invitation Came as a result of implementing in Whakatuu, Nelson Followed up with an email invite Put on programme to workshop at Hui-a-Tau 2010, Te Whariki Tautoko Highlighted need for framework to benefit members Prepared by J. Elkington. Edited by T. Wilson

What we did Introduced the process, some history, reasons for whanau tautoko. Split into groups of 4-5. Discussed current supervision experience. Debriefed as a big group. Split into same groups of 4-5. Discussed values of tapu, noa, ihi, aroha, wero, tika, manaaki. Concluded with learnings. Prepared by J. Elkington. Edited by T. Wilson

Why we did it To provide space to “groan” about what is inappropriate supervision To provide space to define what is appropriate whanau tautoko To care and grow ourselves as supervisors, as practitioners reflecting kaupapa maori in social and health services To preserve values of tika, manaaki, tapu, noa, ihi, aroha, wero To affirm ourselves in our knowledge of what it is we need and want from whanau tautoko Prepared by J. Elkington. Edited by T. Wilson

Prepared by J. Elkington. Edited by T. Wilson How we did it Karakia Mihimihi Whakawhanaungatanga Mahi Tahi Whakatau Prepared by J. Elkington. Edited by T. Wilson

Feedback Need better words for supervisor and supervisee. Kaitiaki? Has affirmed my knowledge and practise I may need 3 or 4 supervisors for different things, not just 1 for everything Perhaps whakapapa each of the values. I’m on the right track I want to be able to choose when I gain supervision, not always once a month at the same time Need to find a better word for model. Praxis? Practise? I should be able to choose my supervisor Nothing I don’t already know Validates what I am already doing Prepared by J. Elkington. Edited by T. Wilson

Facilitator Learnings Noticed wide range of experience from being the teacher in supervision to enjoying privileged korero with kaumatua Find more activities to work with values, can’t do enough Redefine “mainstream” and use the term “general stream” Korero i te reo mo te nuinga o te wa Privileged to make space, place and time for whanau tautoko, as facilitators we are not the experts, just making the space for those who are Spend more time on whakapapa of each of the values, eg breaking the words down linguistically, aro/ha Crayons and paper were great resources to have on hand Prepared by J. Elkington. Edited by T. Wilson

Acknowledgements Matewawe Pouwhare as Tumuaki and the Roopu Matua for recognising the importance of whanau tautoko and making space on the programme Haukainga at Kaputuhi Marae, Waitomo Nga Kaitiaki for participation and attendance Whaea Hinekahukura Aranui for her gentle reminders to tika and pono Te Whariki Tautoko Incorporated Society Prepared by J.
