Ephesians Class Schedule 5/6/18 Eph 2_17_19 R. Henderson

The Components of the Church* 2:11-22 I. Our Past as Gentiles 2:11-12 a. In General Terms 2:11 b. In Specific Terms 2:12 II. Our Present as Christians 2:13-22 a. The New Position 2:13 b. The New Blessing 2:14-18 c. The New Relationship 2:19-22 - Our Citizenship 2:19 - Our Foundation 2:20 - Our Growth 2:21-22 * McCalley

17  and He came and preached peace to you who were far away, and peace to those who were near; 18  for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father. 19  So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household,

17  and He came and preached peace to you who were far away, and peace to those who were near; and He came – lit: and having come (past point fact) and preached peace to you preached - lit: He preached - euangelizō - is almost always used of "the good news" concerning the Son of God as proclaimed in the Gospel - see Eph 3:18 peace - eirēnē - the harmonized relationships between God and man, accomplished through the gospel, - see Acts 10:36 not only is Jesus Christ our peace (v. 14), but He also preached peace. He preached the message of peace - Constable When did Christ preach peace?

17  and He came and preached peace to you who were far away, and peace to those who were near; Isa 57:19b Peace, peace to him who is far and to him who is near," Says the LORD, "and I will heal him." to you who were far away – who is this? see Eph 2:13, Acts 2:39 to those (to those ones) who were near – who is this? through His apostles following His ascension (cf. Acts 1:1-2, 8) to both Gentiles and Jews. Constable The words “far” and “near” --- are Hebrew idioms that describe the position of Jews and Gentiles relative to God - McCalley

18  for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father. for through Him (Christ) we both (Jew & Gentile) have our (the) access lit: have the access have - echo - of things in one's possession (present tense) access - prosagōgē "a leading or bringing into the presence of" a. The word is made up of agō, "to bring," and pros, "facing," thus, is used of a person who brings another into the presence of a third party. b. Denotes "access," with which is associated the thought of freedom to enter through the assistance or favor of another. Vine/Wuest

More on Access Rom 5:2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. through whom – who is this? we have obtained our introduction or we have access (a leading or bring face to face) by faith into this grace perfect tense: we had access in the past by faith and continue to have access up into the present by faith – indicating permanence

More on Access (cont.) Ephesians 3:11 This was in accordance with the eternal purpose which He carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness and confident access through faith in Him. we have confident access (lit. access in confidence) confident – pepoithēsis - trust, assurance – root is “to persuade” How is this confident access possible? How do we obtain it? also see 2 Cor 3:2-4

18  for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father. The remainder of the verse gives us more details about our access 1st - in one Spirit or by means of one Spirit 2nd - to the Father lit: into the presence of the Father (Wuest) Summary ideas: We have access in our position in Christ – Eph 2:6 We have access in our prayers via the Holy Spirit – Rom 8:26-27

19  So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household, so then – now then or now therefore In the words "now therefore" (ara oun), "Paul brings to their conclusion the statements made in vv. 14-18, and draws from them the natural, comforting inference" (Wuest) you (Gentiles) are no longer strangers and aliens 1st you are - eimi – lit: to be – the state in which someone or something continuously exits The Gentiles relationship to God has changed!

19  So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household, no longer – a negative adverb of time, signifies "no longer, no more" strangers - xenos - denotes “a stranger, foreigner.” The word speaks of that which is of a different quality or nature than something else, thus, alien to it. see Matt 27:7, Heb 11:13 Sinners are aliens (strangers) to the kingdom of God, having a totally-depraved nature that makes them different, and different in a hostile sense. (Wuest)

19  So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household, also we are no longer “aliens” aliens - paroikos – a sojourner, one who dwells in a foreign country, a temporary dweller not having a settled habitation in the place where he currently resides see Acts 7:6 , Acts 7:29 also can be used spiritually - Eph. 2:19; 1 Pet. 2:11 also see 1 Pet. 1:17

19  So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household, but you are fellow citizens with the saints 2nd you are - eimi – lit: to be – the state in which someone or something continuously exits fellow citizens - sympolitēs -syn, "with," and politēs "a member of a city or state”, denotes "a fellow-citizen," i.e., possessing the same citizenship – see Luke 19:14, Acts 21:39 with (or of) the saints What is said of the “saints citizenship”? see Phil 3:20, Phil 1:27

19  So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household, and are of God's household household - lit: members of the household see Gal 6:10 They are fellow citizens with Jewish believers in the church, God's new household (1 Tim. 3:15). Christians are also fellow citizens of heaven with all the other saints of other ages. Constable 5/6/18 Eph 2_17_19 R. Henderson
