Covent Gardens Located on easternmost part of Westminster, and southwest corner of Camden. One of London’s most popular tourist spots. Past: Vegetable and Fruit market Present: Shops, Theatre, Pubs, Restaurants #1 Entertainment Center in London

History Received its named during reign of King John. A huge kitchen during the Middle Ages. 40 acres Became the #1 source of Fruit and Vegetables (1200-1500) The gardens were managed by leaseholders. Proved to be problematic. King Henry VIII stepped in. Assigned Property.

History Cont. (1600-1800) Covent Gardens Redeveloped Architect Inigo Jones. The centerpiece was an arcaded piazza. St. Paul’s cathedral Became base for Market Traders. Great Fire of 1666. Most important market Exotic Items brought up Thames River.

Present Day 1960’s proved to rough times. Needed redevelopment again. Congestion (lorries) Needed redevelopment again. 1973 Robert Carr, “listed building status”. Three years later “New Covent Garden Market” was born. Run by government agency

St. Paul’s Cathedral Four different versions (604 AD) Early built out of Wood Improved to stone. The church standing today finished in 1240. Additions were put on 1256. Completed in 1314 Third Longest church in Europe.

16th Century Building started to fall apart. Henry VIII and Edward VI Churchyards sold as rental properties. Evangelical Protestants 1549 Protestant protestors incited a Riot. Destroyed cathedrals and decorations. 1561, church spire damaged by lightening. A message from God being angry

Redesign 1630, front refaced by Inigo Jones. English Civil War and Great Fire of 1666. Task of reconstruction at hand: Christopher Wren (1668) Two designs rejected. Third accepted by King Charles II Went against Kings word and made own “ornamental” changes. Completed in 1708 (Portland Stone)
