II. English Reformation A. King Henry VIII denied an annulment or divorce by the Pope he dumps Catholicism Henry is head of the English Church Video: Mac users click on the black circle to view video on the Gutenberg Press. Original Link: https://vimeo.com/145459575 In England there were criticisms of the Catholic Church as well. However it wouldn’t be Calvin, Luther or the people who would demand change. It would be the King of England, King Henry VIII. At first, Henry VIII was against the Protestant revolt. The pope even awarded him the title “Defender of the Faith” for something Henry wrote denouncing Luther. But in 1527, Henry became angry with the Church. After 18 years of marriage, Henry and his wife, Catherine of Aragon, only had one child, Mary Tudor. Henry wanted a son to inherit his throne. So Henry wanted to marry Anne Boleyn, in hopes they would have a son. Because Catholic law does not permit divorce, he asked the pope to annul, or cancel, his marriage. The pope refused. So he separated the English Church from the Catholic Church, & made himself the head of the English Church. Henry then wed Anne Boleyn, who bore him a second daughter, Elizabeth. In the years ahead, Henry married four more times but had only one son, Edward. Other Notes: When Henry’s daughter, Mary became queen; her violent efforts to restore Catholicism earned her the name “Bloody Mary.” After Mary’s death, her successor & Protestant half-sister, Elizabeth I, followed a moderate course in religion, known as Anglicanism. King Henry VIII

II. English Reformation B. Henry’s daughter, Mary, “Bloody Mary” became queen - attempted to restore Catholicism C. Elizabeth I reformed church for moderates - Anglicanism - Mass in English rather than Latin - Catholics NOT persecuted if loyal to Elizabeth - Ended some Catholic rituals & removed roods – walls between priests & people Church of England Episcopalian After Henry died, his children all had short reigns at the throne, But when Henry’s daughter of Catherine of Aragon, took the throne in 1553, the country developed into turmoil. She was a Catholic who returned the English Church to the rule of the pope. People rebelled against her, and she had many Protestants executed, so many she was named, “Bloody Mary.”When Mary died in 1558, Elizabeth, Anne Boleyn’s daughter, inherited the throne. Elizabeth I was determined to return her kingdom to Protestantism. In 1559, her government set up the Church of England, or Anglican Church, with Elizabeth as its head. This was to be the only legal church in England. Elizabeth decided to establish a state church that moderate Catholics and moderate Protestants might both accept. Anglican To please Protestants: 1. priests in the Church of England were allowed to marry. 2. Priests could deliver sermons in English, not Latin. To please Catholics: 1. The Church of England kept some of the trappings of the Catholic service such as rich robes. 2. Church services were revised to be somewhat more acceptable to Catholics This story and was told in a movie back in 1998 called Elizabeth. Click for Trailer.
