Agenda item 1 - Scene setting Go4 for Biodiversity 1st meeting - 01/07/09 Agenda item 1 - Scene setting DG ENV strategic policy needs on Biodiversity & The Biodiversity Information System for Europe (BISE) DG ENV.B.2

DG ENV strategic policy needs (1) With regard to biodiversity policy in general: Post 2010 Vision and Target(s), future action plan and global agenda Increased focus on ecosystems (services) Develop and apply Green infrastructure concept Apply ecosystem-based adaptation for climate change Develop early warning system for invasive species Strengthen spatial perspective (e.g. remote sensing data) Better understanding of DPSIR and related indicators Impacts of production and consumption on biodiversity Use results from major international, EU and national research programmes on biodiversity and ecosystem services Set up science-policy interface (EU mechanism, IPBES)

DG ENV strategic policy needs (2) With regard to the EU nature legislation and the Natura 2000 network in particular: Assess the effectiveness of EU nature legislation (conservation status, including Natura 2000) Completing the Natura 2000 network on land and on sea Monitor, adapt where necessary and improve the coherence of the Natura 2000 network Make sure that conservation and management instruments are put into place by the Member States Reinforce communication on and public acceptance of the Natura 2000 network

Biodiversity Information Systems Information Management at the centre of our implementation and policy development. Implementing 2005 Go4 Technical Arrangement and Environmental Data Centres Implementing 2007 EC Directive 2007 establishing an Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community (INSPIRE) Implementing 2008 EC Communication concerning a Shared Environmental Information System (SEIS)
