Strategies for embedding quotes Give background on what is happening at this moment in the story. Cite whether the character is speaking, thinking, seeing, etc.

Night quotations “Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed under a silent sky.” Elie witnesses the slaughtering of many children and thinks, “Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed under a silent sky.”

"Never shall I forget those moments that murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to ashes" (Wiesel 34). Elie recalls the impact that witnessing the deaths of the children will forever have on him: "Never shall I forget those moments that murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to ashes" (Wiesel 34).

"Some talked of God, of his mysterious ways, of the sins of the Jewish people, and their future deliverance. But I ceased to pray" (42). Elie starts to show his fading faith when he thinks, "Some talked of God, of his mysterious ways, of the sins of the Jewish people, and their future deliverance. But I ceased to pray" (42).

"Where is He? Here He is-He is hanging here on this gallows" (Wiesel 65). "Where is God's mercy? Where's God? How can I believe in this God of Mercy?" (Wiesel 77).
