THINK SLIDESHOW Examining the responses

BEFORE YOU WATCH You are going to think about what impact the responses you see are having Are they short-term? or Are they long-term?

OXFAM’S 3 APPROACHES… Development Helping communities to help themselves, by empowering them to find solutions. Emergencies Saving lives in the short term. Campaigning for Change Ensuring the voices of vulnerable people are heard; pressuring world leaders and pushing for lasting change.

SHORT TERM… Generally this means the response deals immediately with the symptoms. (Like going to the doctor if you have a cold…) For example: Using trucks to deliver water to people who lack access to water. This is called humanitarian emergency work.

LONG TERM… Preventing the symptoms from happening in the future. This is dealing with the causes. (Like exercising so you don’t catch a cold in the first place…) For example: Building wells so people have access to water in future. This is called development or campaigning.

USE THE WORKSHEET… For each response, the worksheet will help you to decide if it is short term or long term. When you see the BLUE TICK on screen… …tick either short-term, long-term, or both on the sheet.

NOW… Watch the film clips, and think about what you are seeing…

FINISHED WATCHING? What examples of action did you see…?

WATER VULNERABILITY TREE… Look at your tree again. Write the solutions in the fruit.

FINISHED WATCHING? Did you manage to spot all the different responses listed on your sheet? Have you decided if they were short or long-term actions? Now it’s time to think about them a bit more…

LONG TERM… Use the response cards and put them in the correct circle to show the type of action… Choose: Humanitarian emergency Development Campaigning RESPONSE RESPONSE RESPONSE Note that some cards may fall between circles.
