Studies in Philippians(17) Epaphroditus Philippians 2:25-30

Previously Paul is challenging these brethren to shine as lights in the midst of this crooked and perverse generation His hope was that they stand fast so that in the day of Christ (judgment), he will rejoice, knowing he has not labored in vain He then addressed sending Timothy to them Today, Epaphroditus

Epaphroditus Only mentioned in this letter – 4:18 – where he brings a gift to Paul from the Philippians The messenger of the Philippians ἀπόστολος, (Apostolos) – the word means an official messenger – 2 Corinthians 8:23, Galatians 1:19, Hebrews 3:1, etc.

Epaphroditus A brother – part of God’s family Fellow worker – working for the cause of Christ. He likely did much more than what is recorded here Fellow soldier – we are fighting the good fight 1 Timothy 6:12 A minister – one who aided Paul (in that society, one who served at his own expense), sacrificing for a good work. Hebrews 8:2, Romans 15:16

Epaphroditus - Our text Paul is returning him to them (25) He was longing for his brethren, who heard of his sickness (26) He had become sick (27, 30) But he survived (27) – because of the mercy of God – (cf. 2 Corinthians 4:1)

Epaphroditus - Our text And on me also (27) – Paul’s gratitude for his blessings Paul sent him back home (28) - that they might rejoice, and he (Paul) would be less sorrowful – concerned about well being of others cf. 2 Corinthians 11:28 Are we more concerned about ourselves or others? Philippians 2:3-4, 1 Corinthians 13:5

Epaphroditus - Our text Receive him back in the Lord with gladness and hold such men in high esteem (29) Whatever his sickness, it was for the work of Christ (30) - he did not regard his life as he came close to death To supply what was lacking (30)– he completed his “mission”

Epaphroditus - Lessons for us Little things are a bid deal We read very little about him, but what he did matters Matthew 10:42 A thank you, kind words, a small deed, helping someone. In the grand scheme it may be meaningless, but such things make a BIG difference. Do we take time to notice little things?

Epaphroditus - Lessons for us He did not let obstacles keep him from accomplishing his task Life is not always easy. Filled with obstacles. How do we deal with them? Philippians 3:13-14, 2 Corinthians 12:8-10 How much does it take for me to give up or slow down? Cf. Revelation 14:13

Epaphroditus - Lessons for us An example of sacrifice to others It is not just about us! How much are we willing to sacrifice for God and for one another as brethren?

Epaphroditus - Lessons for us His was “a work of Christ” All we do must be with this in mind - Colossians 3:17, 1 Corinthians 10:31 Said of Timothy – 1 Corinthians 16:10 Philippians 3:7-8 God is watching and knows what we are doing. When we get discouraged don’t forget this!

Epaphroditus - Lessons for us Do we hold such men in high esteem? There are men and women who do what needs to be done, often without fanfare or recognition Hebrews 13:7, 17 – elders are to be recognized for their work 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 – those laboring among you

Epaphroditus - Lessons for us Do we hold such men in high esteem? Do we let our elders and others know how much we appreciate their efforts? OR do we just criticize them when things go wrong? Many tasks are done “behind the scenes” and unnoticed.

Epaphroditus - Lessons for us Do we hold such men in high esteem? When all one hears is complaints and criticisms, it wears and takes it toll! Most are not seeking praise, but a sincere “thank you” AND some levity before passing judgment on a decision is needed.

Epaphroditus - Lessons for us Do we hold such men in high esteem? Galatians 6:1-2 – these are willing to help you bear your burdens. We ALL should do this. HOWEVER, don’t forget – Galatians 5:13, 6:5 – don’t take undue advantage, and DO YOUR part!

Am I a faithful servant of God? Epaphroditus Phil. 2:25-30
