The Theory of Plate Tectonics 3.3 notes How plates move  The theory of plate tectonics states that pieces of Earth’s lithosphere are in slow, constant.
How do convection currents form? a. heated mantle material is less dense and rises to the top of the asthenosphere b. mantle material cools under the lithosphere,
Plate Tectonics Continental Drift Crust is broken into plates that are in constant, very slow motion, driven by convection currents in the mantle. Puzzle-like.

Friday 2/22/19 Please have your book as well. Bell Ringer: Give two examples of how plate tectonics (movement of earth’s crust) changes Earth’s surface.
Presentation transcript:

Thursday 2/21/19 Bell Ringer: Use the map to identify if the Nazca Plate has a convergent or divergent boundary with the South American plate. Once you identify the boundary, list the landform features that would most likely be at that boundary? You can use your book to help you. Show them HOW to cut it out and glue. Have a cut-out Example. 5 minutes

Quick-Sketch-Label Share and Compare

Plate Tectonics Notes Color using realistic colors similar to what is shown to the right. Then cut out on the SOLID lines. You will create 3 large tabs. GLUE ONLY behind the words “Plate Tectonics” and put on a clean page in your spiral.

Converging Plates 2 plates move towards each other. Density of the crust determines what plates ends up on top. Different densities = 1 sinks and creates a deep ocean trench & volcanoes. Same density = both go up creating mountain ranges. 5

Oceanic and Continental Plate types Oceanic and Oceanic Oceanic and Continental Continental and Continental Volcanoes 5 Mountains - Himalayas

Divergent Plates 2 plates move apart ocean crust moves apart = a mid-ocean ridge crust moves apart on land = deep valley called a rift valley. 7

Continent Crust Ocean Crust

Rift Valley in Iceland

Transform Plates 2 plates slip past each other moving in opposite directions. Earthquakes often occur as the plates slip past each other.

Transform Plates San Andreas Fault in CA Maybe draw a picture of a road going across the fault. Ask students what would happen when the two plates began to move.

7 Put landforms activity under doccam. Do the first (mountains) together. Make sure to label the illustration with the two types of crust and any other important features.

Plate tectonics is the cause of… Continental Drift Size and shape of the oceans Earthquakes Volcanoes Mountain Ranges Deep-ocean trenches Mid-ocean ridges Rift valley
